About The Position

This position is responsible for assisting in the management of the Department of Corrections (DOC) Basic Training (BT) Program for parole staff (field and institutional side). The work schedule is Monday through Friday, 7:30 am to 3:30 pm. This position is not eligible for telework. The role provides the full range of supervisory duties for parole trainees during Basic Training. It oversees and/or participates in the planning, development, and coordination for parole trainees during Basic Training at the Training Academy. Classroom instruction may be provided when necessary. The position evaluates the effectiveness of the Basic Training program and assesses the results of relevant training programs for all levels of DOC parole staff. It plans, designs, implements, and instructs training programs for all levels of parole staff. The role works with vendors to provide courses not offered by in-house staff and provides oversight, or arranges oversight, for these presentations, serving as contract administrator in these situations. The position serves as Manager in Charge for Training Academy operations, as directed, and independently and appropriately resolves classroom problems. Technical reports related to human resources issues are prepared, which may include documents for accreditation, reports to the Office of Administration, and reports on special issues. Classroom instruction is assessed to ensure instructors use proper adult learner instructional techniques, the classroom is managed, students are engaged, co-facilitators work together appropriately, and instructors follow lesson plans and achieve learning objectives. Instructor coaching and feedback are provided to improve presentation skills. Training conducted within Basic Training is ensured to be in accordance with current DOC policies and procedures. Instructor certifications are monitored and maintained, ensuring instructors have the necessary skills and certifications to teach required courses and curriculum within Basic Training and specialized programs. Leadership, facilitation, support, and technical expertise are provided to Agency committees as assigned. Reviews of Basic Training examinations are participated in to ensure they reflect current curriculum. The Classmarker database is assisted with maintaining. Violations of the Department of Corrections and institutional policies, directives, and procedures by subordinate staff are supervised, investigated, and participated in fact-finding sessions. Travel may be required to facilitate the performance of agent OJT audits when requested. Parole OJT completion is overseen and completion records are retained. The BT class schedule and instructor schedule for the Parole BT program are developed and implemented to maintain an adequate number of qualified instructors. Close work with the BT Captain and BT Lieutenant (institutional side) is maintained to schedule classrooms for instructional activities. The position serves as a liaison with parole supervisors and other staff related to the parole basic training program and any trainee concerns. Assigned sergeants are supervised per the organizational structure. Other duties as required or assigned will be performed.

Requirements

  • One year as a Corrections Officer 2 (Commonwealth job title); or Four years of experience in corrections security work in a Pennsylvania state or county corrections facility.
  • Must successfully complete, or have completed, a training program conducted by the Department of Corrections.
  • Must be eligible for selection in accordance with Merit System Employment Regulations.
  • Must pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements.
  • Must have or have held regular civil service status in one of the following classifications: Corrections Officer 2, Corrections Officer 1, Parole Supervisor.
  • Must have a minimum of one year in the next lower classes by the posting closing dates with no break in service.
  • Meritorious service: (a) the absence of any discipline above the level of written reprimand during the 12 months preceding the closing date of the posting, and (b) the last regular or probationary performance evaluation showing an overall rating of satisfactory or higher.

  • Certain SCI Corrections Officer positions will require applicants to have and maintain an active Pennsylvania non-commercial Class C driver's license or equivalent.
