About The Position

The Juvenile Corrections Officer maintains safety and security of juvenile offenders, staff, and the community by supervising the conduct, work, discipline, and recreation of offenders. Work involves teaching juvenile offender accountability, competency development, and reintegration techniques. The supervision ranges from close to general with the use of initiative and independent judgment ranging from minimal latitude to moderate latitude. The Juvenile Corrections Officer is subject to work overtime and be on call.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Must have two years of office work experience and must be at least 18 years of age due to sensitivity of work assignments and daily contacts within the Correctional Facility.
  • Pre-employment fitness for duty assessment to determine the applicant's suitability for job duties.
  • Pre-employment Basic Skills-Written test.
  • Upon request, provide documentation of attendance and punctuality.
  • Must have no criminal convictions that include felony or misdemeanor offenses in Tribal, State, or Federal Courts one year prior to employment with the Yakama Nation.
  • Must have no record of dependency actions, current ending or past in Tribal, State or Federal.
  • Completion of a certified Correctional Officers Training, at an accredited institution of learning such as the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center or other approved training facility.
  • Must be willing to work irregular hours, overtime, weekends, holidays, and rotating shifts.
  • Must understand the position and working conditions; and consider the impact on personal lifestyle and family.
  • Required to sign a code of conduct and understand sanctions for misconduct.
  • Required to maintain Basic First Aid and CPR card.
  • Required to maintain Food Handler's card.
  • Required to wear a department-issued uniform.
  • Required to take an annual Physical and PEB training.
  • Must be able to type/keyboard a minimum of 35 words per minute (WPM).
  • Required to pass criminal background check; finger printing criminal record and driving record.
  • Required to pass a pre-employment background check.
  • Required to pass a pre-employment drug test.
  • Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License with the ability to obtain a Yakama Nation Driving permit.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise youth in an empathetic and understanding manner fostering the cooperation of the youth in the treatment process.
  • Effectively communicate with youth and explain the progress of the youth to their family members and other treatment staff.
  • Remain alert, observant, and be physically able to respond appropriately to work situations or emergencies including, but not limited to, physical restraint of youth using verbal and physical crisis intervention/de-escalation techniques and emergency treatment procedures.
  • Intervene, correct behavior, and facilitate group discussions and activities.
  • Respond to abusive language and conduct in a manner consistent with instructions received in training.
  • Transport youth and travel as necessary; attend to the medical needs of the juvenile inmates and coordinate with the correction's juvenile supervisor and staff for their appointments and transporting the inmates to their location off site.
  • File received orders and archive files as needed.
  • Assist outside agencies as needed with inmate information upon release of information and approval from the Corrections Administrator or authorized designee.
  • Coordinate meetings with Yakama Nation Behavioral Health and/or Comprehensive Mental Health to meet the Mental Health needs of juvenile inmates.
