About The Position

The Alaska Department of Corrections (DOC), Division of Health and Rehabilitation Services, is recruiting for a Corrections Nurse 1/2 to join the team at the Mat-Su Pretrial facility (MSPT) in Palmer, Alaska. The primary responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to: Triage and assess patients, administer prescribed medications and treatments, maintain patient medical records, observe, document, and report changes in the physical and mental conditions of patients, and handle crisis situations in a calm and effective manner. The Department of Corrections provides for the health and welfare of offenders committed to the custody of AK DOC. Health and Rehabilitation Services (HARS) provides essential healthcare in secure facilities housing sentenced and unsentenced offenders. Nurses working in correctional settings must become fluent in our policy, procedures and protocols as well as have a deep understanding of their scope of practice in order to meet standard of care and fulfill our Mission and Vision.

Requirements

  • Eligibility for licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Alaska.
  • For Corrections Nurse 2: One year of entry level experience as a Registered Nurse.
  • Alaska Registered Nursing License or the ability to obtain one, or be within 30 days of graduating from a nursing program.
  • List of three (3) professional references, two of which must be supervisory.
  • Must pass a background investigation, including fingerprinting.
  • Must provide proof they are free from active pulmonary tuberculosis at the time of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Successful completion of a formal training plan as a Corrections Nurse 1 with the State of Alaska
  • Prior service as a Corrections Nurse 1, Psychiatric Nurse 1, or Nurse 1 with the State of Alaska or its equivalent with another employer.
  • Combinations of prior training and experience in other specializations of nursing care (e.g., Med-Surg, Psychiatric, Public Health, Critical Care) will be evaluated for comparability on a case-by-case basis.
