About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is a large state agency responsible for safeguarding lives and property, and for the care, custody, and supervision of adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons, probation/parole services, Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations, and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. The Correctional Sergeant II position reports to the Correctional Lieutenant II and is responsible for increasing custody and security coverage. This role involves assigning lower-level custody staff, overseeing officer activities and performance, and ensuring the custody, security, and welfare of offenders are maintained. The position is located at Pender Correctional Institution, a medium custody facility for male offenders in Burgaw, North Carolina.

Requirements

  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years six months of experience as a Correctional Officer OR Two years of experience as Correctional Officer II OR An equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • MUST be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Produce a negative drug screening result
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
  • Possess a valid driver’s license

Responsibilities

  • Serving as first-line supervisor of Correctional Officer II’s.
  • Arranging work schedules to ensure shift coverage.
  • Ensuring accurate recording of worktime/leave for subordinate staff.
  • Implementing operational procedures and ensuring rules and regulations are followed according to policy.
  • Ensuring officers’ equipment is always fully functional and available.
  • Serving as the Officer-in-Charge (OIC).
  • Supervising offenders in restrictive housing.
