About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is a large state agency responsible for the care, custody, and supervision of adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons, probation/parole services, and various support divisions. The Division of Institutions manages the daily operations of all state-operated prison facilities across North Carolina, categorized by custody levels. Albemarle Correctional Institution is a medium custody facility housing up to 856 male offenders.

Requirements

  • Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302).
  • Pass a criminal background check.
  • Produce a negative drug screening result.
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.
  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years and six months of experience as a Correctional Officer OR Two years of experience as Correctional Officer II OR An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Provides supervision of subordinate officers and their assigned tasks and activities regarding the custody and welfare of male offenders in a Medium custody state correctional facility.
  • Assigns lower-level custody staff to a particular area or post.
  • Oversees officer activities and performance, ensuring custody, security, and welfare of offenders is maintained.
  • Arranges work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implements operational procedures, and ensures rules and regulations are followed according to policy.
  • May serve as the Officer-in-Charge (OIC).
  • Supervises offenders in restrictive housing.
  • Conducts shift line-up, makes shift assignments, and inspects all personnel to determine if they are physically and mentally capable of assuming an assigned post.
  • Completes, reviews, and maintains time reports, duty rosters, leave schedules, performance evaluations, and administrative forms.
  • Completes Incident Reports, Use of Force, Disciplinaries, and Grievances.
