About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is a large state agency responsible for the care, custody, and supervision of adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff, as well as probation/parole officers. The Division of Institutions manages the daily operations of all state-operated prison facilities across North Carolina, categorized by custody levels (minimum, medium, close). Scotland Correctional Institution is a close, medium, and minimum custody facility housing up to 1,800 male offenders. This position reports to the Correctional Housing Unit Manager I and provides supervision for subordinate officers regarding their assigned tasks with male offenders in a Minimum/Medium/Close custody state correctional facility. Job responsibilities include conducting shift line-up, making shift assignments, inspecting personnel, supervising and assigning subordinate officers, completing and reviewing administrative forms, accounting for persons and funds, ensuring equipment is operationally ready, and being responsible for subordinate officers' activities relating to offender custody and welfare. The role involves working rotating and various duty assignments.

Requirements

  • MUST be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Produce a negative drug screening result
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years and six months of experience as a Correctional Officer
  • OR Two years of experience as Correctional Officer II
  • OR An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Conducting shift line-up, making shift assignments, and inspecting personnel to determine if they are physically and mentally capable of assuming an assigned post.
  • Supervising and assigning subordinate officers to a particular area or post.
  • Completing, reviewing, and maintaining time reports, duty rosters, leave schedules, performance evaluations, and administrative forms.
  • Accounting for persons and funds to ensure that all assigned equipment is operationally ready.
  • Responsible for subordinate officers' activities relating to the custody and welfare of offenders.
  • Working rotating and various duty assignments within the defined level of work.
