About The Position

The Correctional Sergeant II reports to a Correctional Housing Unit Manager II at a multi-custody female correctional facility. The position provides first-line supervision of Correctional Officer IIs and helps maintain the custody, security, and welfare of offenders. The sergeant may manage the facility as the Officer-in-Charge when the highest-ranking custody staff member on the premises. This is a full-time position at Anson Correctional Institution, which houses female offenders in medium- and close-custody housing units.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED and either two years and six months of experience as a Correctional Officer or two years of experience as a Correctional Officer II, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.
For Criminal Justice certified positions, applicants must meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements, pass a criminal background check, receive a negative drug screening result, successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations, and possess a valid driver's license.
Applicants must complete the State application, including education history, work experience, and applicable certificates and licenses.
Education must be from appropriately accredited institutions.

Responsibilities

Assign lower-level custody staff to posts or areas and oversee and evaluate their activities and performance.
Maintain the custody, security, and welfare of offenders.
Coordinate work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implement operational procedures, and ensure compliance with policies and regulations.
Manage the facility as Officer-in-Charge when serving as the highest-ranking custody staff member on the premises.
Ensure staff are properly trained and follow appropriate conduct, actions, and procedures.
Conduct regular facility inspections to ensure security and compliance with maintenance, health, and safety requirements.
Communicate instructions and direction during drills, searches, and emergencies.
Respond to emergencies, including distress codes, escapes, and offender transportation.
Conduct or supervise searches of offenders, living areas, and work areas for contraband.
Investigate security issues, incidents, disputes, and complaints, and take action when appropriate.
Prepare and review reports and complete subordinate staff performance evaluations.
