About The Position

The Correctional Sergeant I provides first-line supervision to Correctional Officer I staff in a minimum-custody security facility. Reporting to the Correctional Lieutenant I, the position oversees custody staff assignments and performance and helps maintain the custody, security, and welfare of offenders. The role assigns work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implements operational procedures, and ensures that staff follow applicable rules, regulations, and policies. This is a full-time position with rotating shifts at New Hanover Correctional Center in Wilmington, North Carolina, a minimum-custody facility that houses up to 402 male offenders. The position is designated as mandatory for adverse weather events, requiring the employee to report or stay over. The salary range is $37,377 to $65,408, and the position includes State benefits.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED and two years of experience as a correctional officer, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
Must meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302).
Must pass a criminal background check.
Must produce a negative drug screening result.
Must successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations.
Must possess a valid driver’s license.
