Correctional Sergeant I
About The Position
This position is assigned to Hyde Correctional Institution and involves first-line supervision of Correctional Officer I staff in a minimum-custody facility, increasing custody and security coverage. The position may at times be the highest-ranking custody staff member on the grounds or serve as the Officer-in-Charge (OIC). It reports to a Correctional Lieutenant I and/or a Correctional Assistant Warden. The sergeant assigns lower-level custody staff to areas or posts, oversees officer activities and performance, and ensures the custody, security, and welfare of inmates. The role includes arranging work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implementing operational procedures, and ensuring that rules and regulations are followed according to policy.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED and two years of experience as a correctional officer, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
- Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302).
- Pass a criminal background check.
- Produce a negative drug screening result.
- Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations.
- Possess a valid driver's license.
