About The Position

This position is responsible for providing and supervising programs for the rehabilitation of offenders at a medium-custody correctional facility. The primary programs areas are offender classification; correctional programs including educational/vocational, volunteer programs, religion, and recreation, and correctional counseling. Other responsibilities of this position include the following: - Communicating effectively with other staff, offenders, and the general public whether verbally and/or written. - Defending oneself against attack by violent offenders and working under stressful conditions caused by direct contact with incarcerated offenders who can become physically violent and verbally abusive. - Conducting continuous visual and audio surveillance of assigned work area. - Demonstrating and instructing offenders in the proper safe use of tools, equipment, and supplies. - Reviewing, analyzing, and evaluating various documents and behavioral data gathered from interviews, written documentation, and personal observation. - Performing crisis interventions and routine counseling to include suicide prevention. - Training, observing, evaluating, and supervising effectively subordinate staff in their duties and responsibilities. - Accounting for supplies and equipment, developing, implementing, and managing Correctional Programs. - Monitoring off site programs, which may require operation of a motor vehicle in a safe and secure manner at any time of day and in varying weather and road conditions.

Requirements

  • MUST be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Produce a negative drug screening result
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Bachelor’s degree in a human services or criminal justice field from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience in corrections or related work Or An equivalent combination of education and experience.
