Requirements

  • High school diploma or high school equivalency certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education.
  • Two years of experience leading the work of Correctional Officers in the custody and security of adult inmates or in performing advanced work as a Correctional K-9 Officer or Correctional Internal Security Officer.
  • Employees who have not already done so must meet the selection standards required and successfully complete the training prescribed by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission for a correctional officer during their probationary period.
  • Selection standards for correctional officer training include: U.S. Citizenship or Resident Alien status, must be at least 21 years of age, a completed background investigation, oral interview, and physical examination.
  • Employees in this classification hired or reinstated on or after July 1, 2016 shall successfully complete the Entrance Level Firearms Training prescribed by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission and demonstrate practical knowledge and proficiency in the safe use and care of firearms on a periodic basis.
  • Employees in this classification are subject to call-in 24 hours a day and, therefore, must provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.
  • Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification that meets MPCTC training standards in any of the following areas: Academic Instructor, Firearms Instructor, Defensive Tactics Instructor.
  • Experience conducting kennel inspections to ensure compliance with safety, care, and standard conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates and supervises all K-9 Operations within the assigned region.
  • Assume responsibility for the administrative duties, activities, and supervision of handlers within the assigned region.
  • Review reports and makes recommendations to the Assistant K-9 Unit Commander.
  • Ensure Department and K-9 Unit policy and procedures are followed.
  • Enforce K-9 Unit proficiency standards for all assigned personnel.
  • Prepare monthly schedules, coordinating all leave and training to ensure regional coverage and submit documentation to K-9 Unit headquarters.
  • Assume responsibility for all supplies and equipment in the assigned region, to include firearms and training aids.
  • Review reports generated by the regional handlers.
  • Support the Canine Response Team leader who is responsible for coordination, training and emergency operations of the CRT.
  • Prepare and submit statistical reports on patrol and contraband detection dog utilization, (incidents, alerts, finds, arrests, etc.) to the K-9 Unit Commander.
