The Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS) is seeking dedicated candidates to fill important roles within our department. The incumbent shall oversee and coordinate the delivery of entry-level correctional academy training within the assigned Correctional Entrance Level Training Academy, ensure compliance with standards established by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission (MPCTC), Professional Development and Training Division and any other regulatory agency having jurisdiction (ACA, e.g.), and assists academy instructors, adjunct faculty and support staff as needed to resolve any logistical or programmatic issues. Curriculum Oversight: Programmatic oversight of CELTP curriculum and practical training as well as direct supervision of CELTP instructors. Operational Compliance: The incumbent shall ensure that all curriculum and practical training are in full compliance with relevant standards established by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission (MPCTC), Professional Development and Training Division and any other regulatory agency having jurisdiction. This shall include, but not limited to, instructor and program certification as well as proper and timely documentation. Logistical Support: The incumbent shall determine equipment and materials needs for safe and effective delivery of correctional academy training and recommend their purchase and/or use as needed. The incumbent shall also assist the academy instructors and adjunct faculty to resolve any logistical or programmatic issues as they arise. Fiscal Oversight: The incumbent shall coordinate with the CELTP Academy Coordinator on development of an annual operating budget and insure the academy operations are maintained within the appropriate budget.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or high school equivalency certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Correctional Training Commission regulation.
  • Two years of experience leading the work of Correctional Officers in the custody and security of adult inmates or in performing advanced work as a Correctional K-9 Officer or Correctional Internal Security Officer.
  • Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
  • Employees in this classification may be required to operate large vans for transportation of inmates. Employees assigned these duties will be required to acquire a Class C Maryland driver's license.
  • Employees who have not already done so must meet the selection standards required and successfully complete the training prescribed by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission for a correctional officer during their probationary period, (Correctional Services Article, Section 8-209).
  • Employees in this classification hired or reinstated on or after July 1, 2016 shall successfully complete the Entrance Level Firearms Training prescribed by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission (Code of Maryland 12.10.04.04 and 12.10.04.05) and demonstrate practical knowledge and proficiency in the safe use and care of firearms on a periodic basis.
  • Employees in this classification are subject to call-in 24 hours a day and, therefore, must provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.
  • Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
