About The Position

This position is located at Avery/Mitchell Correctional Institution in Spruce Pine, North Carolina. This is a medium custody male facility. This position reports to a Correctional Programs Supervisor and is responsible for conducting initial assessments of offender needs and developing case plans, monitoring for compliance and results, and revising as appropriate to meet offender needs and achieve system objectives.

Requirements

Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice, Human Services, Recreation or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution; or High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of custody experience within the North Carolina Department of Public Safety; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
Pass a criminal background check
Produce a negative drug screening result
Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
Possess a valid driver’s license

Responsibilities

Employees carry a caseload of offenders, which involves supportive counseling, conducting assessments, developing case plans, answering and following up on offender questions and problems and making recommendations to the classification committee.
Assess offender behavior and develop counseling strategies to achieve desired offender progress.
Employees also assist in major dynamic programs or coordinate major or specialized programs for the rehabilitation of inmates, such as inmate work assignments, work release, education, or recreation, as well as transition planning and coordinating.
Planning and coordinate transition (re-entry) prior to parole or release into the community for offenders.
Working under stressful conditions caused by direct contact with incarcerated offenders who can become physically violent and verbally abusive.
Provide Supportive Counseling techniques and interviewing skills.
Developing, implementing, coordinating, and supervising a program withing the framework of Prisons’ policies and procedures.
