About The Position

This position is at Alexander Correctional Institution in Taylorsville, North Carolina. Alexander Correctional is a closed custody male facility with approximately 1,000 beds. The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters!

Requirements

  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of experience as a correctional officer; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Produce a negative drug screening result
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
  • Possess a valid driver’s license

Responsibilities

  • Assigning lower-level custody staff to a particular area or post.
  • Evaluating and overseeing officer activities and performance and ensuring that the custody, security, and welfare of offenders is maintained.
  • Coordinating work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implementing standard operational procedures (SOPs) and ensuring rules and regulations are followed according to policy.
  • Ensuring that staff are fully trained and that proper conduct, actions, and procedures are being followed.
  • Maintaining facility security through regular inspections to ensure compliance with governing regulations and standards relating to facility maintenance, health, and safety of offenders.
  • Communicating effectively instructions/directions during drills, searches, and in emergencies situations.
  • Responding to emergency situations such as; distress codes, escapes, and transportation of offenders.
  • Conducting and/or supervising searches of offenders, offender living areas and work areas for contraband.
  • Investigating and taking action when appropriate regarding security issues, incidents, disputes, and complaints.
  • Preparing, reviewing reports and completing performance evaluations on subordinate staff.
