About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! Anson Correctional Institution houses female offenders in medium and close custody housing units. Anson CI offers a wide variety of educational, vocational, and training programs. Correction Enterprises operates the offender packaging operation at Anson, a partnership with Union Supply Direct through the Prison Industry Enhancement Program (PIE). Family and friends can order a package of goods from a pre-approved shopping list to send to an offender. Orders are packaged by offenders and shipped quarterly.

Requirements

  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma AND three years of experience as a Correctional Officer, OR two years of experience as a Correctional Officer III; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.
  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Produce a negative drug screening result
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
  • Possess a valid driver’s license

Responsibilities

  • Assigning lower level custody staff and overseeing Correctional Officer activities and performance.
  • Arranging work schedule rules to ensure staff coverage.
  • Implementing operational procedures and ensuring rules and regulations are followed according to DAC policy and procedures.
  • Giving direction during drills, searches, and emergencies.
  • Referring offenders to Restrictive Housing for temporary assignment as needed.
  • Leading staff in carrying out tactical assignment(s) as needed.
  • Responding to emergency situations, searching for escaped offenders, and transporting offenders.
  • Conducting and/or supervising searches of offenders, their living quarters, and work areas for contraband.
  • Investigate and take action when appropriate regarding security issues, incidents, disputes, and complaints.
  • Preparing and reviewing a variety of reports.
  • Completing annual performance evaluations and assisting in assessing, evaluating, and implementing employee discipline.
  • Conducting staff briefing sessions.
