About The Position

This position is located at Avery Mitchell Correctional Institution in Spruce Pine, NC, a medium custody male facility. Reporting to the Associate Warden for Custody, this position provides supervision of subordinate staff, is responsible for the custody and security of the facility, and the safety of the general public.

Requirements

High school or General Education Development (GED) diploma and two years six months of experience as a Correctional Lieutenant, or two years of experience as a Correctional Lieutenant II; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission.
Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
Pass a criminal background check
Produce a negative drug screening result
Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
Possess a valid driver’s license

Nice To Haves

Documented Supervisory Skills in a prison facility.
Knowledge of Facility Operations.
Knowledge of Prison’s Policy and Procedures.
Documented Report Writing Skills.

Responsibilities

Ensure that all custody staff assigned to the facility are physically and mentally capable of assuming a duty post.
Provide daily inspections of offender living, medical, and kitchen areas.
Evaluate weapons and other security equipment are inspected and in good working condition.
Supervise daily counts, reviewing staffing needs and Standard Operating Procedures to make suggestions for revisions, as needed.
Complete, review, and maintain time reports, duty rosters, leave schedules, performance evaluations, and administrative forms.
Conduct investigations and serving as the Officer-in-Charge (OIC), as required.
