About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! Reporting to the Associate Warden for Custody, this position is the Officer-in-charge (OIC) and is responsible for the custody and security of the facility and the safety of the general public. Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: - Planning, supervising, and coordinating activities in a close custody facility. - Following security policies and procedures, assigning and supervising custody staff, and coordinating administrative affairs within the facility - Serving as shift supervisor, supervisor of Correctional Lieutenant III’s, and may serve as Officer-in-Charge. - Conducting frequent inspections of housing units and other buildings, grounds, and posts to ascertain that officers are alert, that discipline is maintained, and that assignments are being carried out effectively. - Implementing disciplinary measures with offenders and employees on minor infractions of rules. - Investigating offender complaints and making reports of such actions to higher level officials. - Working to prevent or resolve disorders such as assaults, riots, fires, and escapes. - Preparing reports on offenders pertaining to their behavior, attitudes, and work records for use on the offender classification committee. - Organizing and conducting training programs for employees, including on-the-job training.

Requirements

  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of experience as a Correctional Lieutenant
  • Two years of experience as a Correctional Lieutenant III
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • MUST be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Produce a negative drug screening result
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
