Requirements

  • High School diploma or high school equivalency certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education.
  • Two years of experience supervising the work of Correctional Officers in the custody and security of adult inmates.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • U.S. Citizenship or Resident Alien status.
  • Must meet selection standards and successfully complete training prescribed by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission for a correctional officer during the probationary period.
  • Must provide a telephone number where they can be reached (subject to call-in 24 hours a day).
  • Must be eligible for promotion on the current Captain eligible list 25-004084-0001.

Nice To Haves

  • Additional education at an accredited college or university (sixty credit hours for one year of experience, with at least 15 credit hours in criminal justice or related social sciences).
  • Equivalent State experience in other correctional field classifications involving daily contact with and custody of inmates, where the salary is comparable to Correctional Officer Lieutenant.
  • U.S. Armed Forces military service experience in correctional classifications or correctional specialty codes in the criminal justice field equivalent to a Correctional Officer Lieutenant on a year-for-year basis.

Responsibilities

  • Provide mid-level managerial control and direction of correctional staff within the Maryland Correctional Transportation Unit.
  • Oversee and direct the operations and personnel of the Maryland Correctional Transportation Unit.
  • Manage the daily operations of transportation in the Baltimore Regions.
  • Ensure that all court details are fully staffed with a sufficient number of correctional officers in accordance with existing policies and procedures.
  • Assign/coordinate inmate transfers within the Division of Correction, ensuring proper assignment of correctional officers to maximize available staff while minimizing overtime.
  • Review time cards for assigned staff daily to identify and address any attendance-related rule violations.
  • Record, document, and report overtime expenditures to the immediate supervisor.
  • Assess reported problems (e.g., court details) and determine immediate corrective actions.
  • Conduct field rounds two to three times weekly, visiting all jails and courthouses within the State of Maryland to ensure line staff are performing their duties according to Division of Correction and/or MRDCC rules and regulations regarding inmate transportation and custody.
  • Perform unannounced uniform inspections, noting and addressing any discrepancies or reporting continued violations to the immediate supervisor.
  • Maintain unit files on assigned staff.
  • Perform other assigned duties and responsibilities as directed by the immediate supervisor.
