About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is a large state agency responsible for safeguarding lives and property, and for the care, custody, and supervision of adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff, as well as probation/parole officers. The agency's mission is to ensure safety and security through prevention, protection, preparation, and supervision. This specific role reports to the Associate Warden of Custody at a medium custody male correctional facility and is involved in the planning, supervision, and coordination of activities within the facility. The position is primarily custodial in nature and involves serving as a shift supervisor and Officer-In-Charge (OIC) as needed.

Requirements

  • High School or General Education Development (GED) diploma AND two years six months of experience as a Correctional Lieutenant, OR two years of experience as a Correctional Lieutenant II; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission.

Nice To Haves

  • Documented knowledge of Prison Policy and Procedures and/or Facility Operations.
  • Documented experience with report writing.

Responsibilities

  • Supervising Correctional Lieutenant II’s.
  • Following security policies and procedures, performing on-the-job training.
  • Assisting with assigning and supervising custody staff, and coordinating administrative affairs within the facility.
  • Serving as the Officer-In-Charge (OIC) as needed.
  • Assisting with personnel actions, administrative affairs, officer’s work schedule and coordinating activities involving discipline, security, and the welfare of the offender population.
  • Serving as shift supervisor as position is primarily custodial in nature.
  • Coordinating actions, such as employee leave requests, interviewing applicants for employment, monthly reports, offender concerns or issues, and other activities relative to a correctional facility.
  • Conducting inspections of housing units and other buildings, grounds, and posts to ascertain that officers are alert that discipline is being maintained, and that assignments are carried out properly.
  • Reviewing investigations regarding security issues, incidents, disputes, and complaints.
  • Assisting in assessing, evaluating, and implementing employee discipline.
  • Preparing a variety of records and reports and performing other duties as required.
