About The Position

The Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS) is seeking dedicated candidates to fill important roles within our department. This position provides direct supervision to correctional officers, sergeants and lieutenants on an assigned shift within the Special Operations Group of the Dept. of Public Safety and Correctional Services.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or high school equivalency certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Correctional Training Commission regulation.
  • Two years of experience supervising the work of Correctional Officers in the custody and security of adult inmates.
  • U.S. Citizenship or Resident Alien status
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • A completed background investigation
  • Oral interview
  • Physical examination
  • Employees who have not already done so must meet the selection standards required and successfully complete the training prescribed by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission for a correctional officer during their probationary period.
  • Employees in this classification hired or reinstated on or after July 1, 2016 shall successfully complete the Entrance Level Firearms Training prescribed by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission and demonstrate practical knowledge and proficiency in the safe use and care of firearms on a periodic basis.
  • Employees in this classification are subject to call-in 24 hours a day and, therefore, must provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.
  • Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification that meets MPCTC training standards in any of the following areas: Academic Instructor, Firearms Instructor, Defensive Tactics Instructor
  • Experience conducting training exercises and demonstrations to ensure tactical preparedness

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for supervising the SOG regional team in a manner that reflects a high degree of integrity and character.
  • Direct supervision of SOG Correctional Lieutenants, Sergeants and Correctional Officers.
  • Provide specific guidance to subordinates in the application of direct supervision, counseling, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of the Emergency Operations Plan and convey the Plan into action in the event of an emergency.
  • Respond to emergency operations across the state.
  • Conduct Interstate Correctional Compact planning and scheduling.
  • Cooperate with any and all allied agencies in daily operations.
  • SKILLS manager for training and certifications.
