About The Position

This role is for individuals who have completed a Summer 2026 Walmart or Sam's Club internship and are looking to convert to a full-time position in 2027. Immigration sponsorship is not available for this role. The position requires a strong understanding of member buying behaviors, channel-specific consumption trends, key member experience touchpoints, and member feedback collection techniques. The intern will monitor member feedback, interpret member data, identify opportunities for new items and categories, research industry and macroeconomic trends, and communicate findings to cross-functional partners. Additionally, the role involves analyzing merchandise and sales data, exploring alternative data sources, and providing recommendations. Coordination with Supply Chain and Operations partners to identify inefficiencies, maintain communication with suppliers, and monitor item quality are key responsibilities. Financial management knowledge, including understanding profit and loss statements and developing business cases, is also required. The role involves strategic negotiation skills, assortment strategy and management, and item merchandising, including private brand strategies and product quality. The intern will be expected to demonstrate expertise, provide business solutions, model compliance, act with integrity, serve customers and members with an omnimerchant and Every Day Low Cost mindset, adopt a broad perspective, and strive for excellence by embracing continuous improvement and new digital tools.

Responsibilities

  • Understand member behavior, including demand trends and buying behaviors across and within specific channels.
  • Monitor member feedback, item reviews, and alternate information channels (e.g., social media).
  • Apply understanding to ways of working and plan for improvement.
  • Interpret member data (e.g., purchase frequency, NPS, customer satisfaction) and share findings with cross-functional partners, peers, and leaders.
  • Identify opportunities to pursue new items and categories and improve member experiences.
  • Research industry and macroeconomic trends (e.g., commodity prices, unemployment rates, purchasing power, competitor strategies) and communicate findings.
  • Weigh the pros and cons of channel strategies for items within an assigned assortment.
  • Review the financial implications (e.g., shipping and packaging costs) of item channel availability.
  • Maintain open lines of communication with peers and cross-functional partners.
  • Review merchandise and sales data and metrics (e.g., item/category/department sales, turns, instock) using appropriate tools and dashboards.
  • Interpret and summarize pertinent information and provide recommendations on the item decision process.
  • Collect and review industry and competitor data (e.g., competitor sales results, trade surveys, data firm reports) and share findings.
  • Explore alternative and emerging data sources (e.g., search engine results, external research publications) and provide recommendations on their applicability.
  • Leverage data analysis tools to perform basic analysis, derive insights, and create or interpret basic reports.
  • Coordinate with partners to identify inefficiencies related to Supply Chain and Operations (e.g., supplier service delivery schedules, inventory levels, flow packaging, merchandise display standards, item placement).
  • Maintain open lines of communication with supplier and vendor partners to understand Supply Chain processes and review performance.
  • Collaborate with Supply Chain partners to understand network capacity, transportation considerations, and other logistics complications.
  • Maintain open lines of communication with Operations and Supply Chain functional partners.
  • Follow up with partners to understand shrink and waste resulting from merchandise and supplier issues.
  • Monitor item quality feedback and identify quality issue trends.
  • Follow up with Operational partners on the impact of item placement and planograms on the associate and member experience.
  • Monitor the impacts of actions taken to improve Supply Chain and Operations efficiencies on the profit and loss statement.
  • Understand the elements of profit and loss statements and derive insights and research opportunities for corrective actions.
  • Support the development of business cases and recommendations to deliver projected return on investment or cost savings.
  • Conduct hindsight analysis as applicable.
  • Review in-season reporting and financial results for key seasonal events.
  • Coordinate with cross-functional partners to determine financial plans and inventory purchase amounts.
  • Understand and employ company policies, practices, and applicable laws and regulations for negotiating.
  • Utilize techniques for establishing rapport and building trust.
  • Negotiate favorable results with suppliers in basic negotiations.
  • Understand the impacts of negotiation terms (e.g., cost of goods, volume, payment) on the overall value derived for the company.
  • Understand the value that needs to be achieved for the company in negotiations.
  • Protect company positions while demonstrating a willingness to create value for the other party.
  • Research the capabilities of suppliers to understand the limits of what is possible within the boundaries of negotiations.

  • Analyze the effectiveness of assortment decisions, evaluate the viability of products and categories, and develop actionable plans to optimize item and assortment performance.
  • Analyze and develop insights on assortment performance by channel while assessing benefits and tradeoffs.
  • Share assortment information and insights with cross-functional partners.
  • Create hypotheses of changes to assortment to predict transferability of sales.
  • Leverage online channels to test additions to assortment to drive incremental sales and member excitement.
  • Analyze the role of private brands and national brands across items in the category, department, assortment, and provide recommendations.
  • Decide the role of items (e.g., repeat purchases, seasonal buys, special buys, loss leaders) within the assortment.
  • Identify ways to drive value for members while creating value for the organization.
  • Provide recommendations to cross-functional partners and leaders.
  • Review and provide input on product quality guidelines, research and identify post-launch quality issues, solicit member feedback, and provide feedback on packaging guidelines.
  • Review item placement and planograms to provide feedback on potential issues or opportunities to improve space utilization.
  • Solicit feedback from Operations partners on item placement.
  • Demonstrate uptodate expertise and apply this to the development, execution, and improvement of action plans by providing expert advice and guidance to others.
  • Support and align efforts to meet customer and business needs and build commitment for perspectives and rationales.
  • Provide and support the implementation of business solutions by building relationships and partnerships with key stakeholders.
