About The Position

We are looking for a Corporate Counsel – Procurement and Projects to support our commercial and procurement activities in the Atlantic markets/region, across Rio Tinto’s portfolio of commodities. The role is based in our Montreal office. You will report to the Senior Corporate Counsel responsible for procurement and projects and work closely with Rio Tinto’s global procurement and commercial teams.

Requirements

  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
  • At least 8+ years of post-qualification experience within a global corporation and/or major international law firm.
  • Experience advising on procurement, strategic sourcing, commercial contracts, capital projects or global supply chains.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and time management skills.
  • A friendly and approachable manner with demonstrated ability to develop strong commercial relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, as well as the capacity for strategic decision-making and managing portfolios independently.
  • Demonstrated ability to succeed in a fast-paced environment with multiple stakeholders.
  • Member of the Quebec Bar.
  • Fluency in French and English, both written and spoken.

Nice To Haves

  • Spanish language skills are strongly preferred and would be a significant asset given the need to support commercial and procurement activities across North America and South America.

Responsibilities

  • Draft and negotiate commercial and procurement contracts, including purchase agreements, master service agreements, logistics agreements, services agreements and other complex commercial arrangements.
  • Understand and advise on commercial and procurement documents integral to global supply chains.
  • Advise procurement teams on contracting strategies, risk allocation, sourcing activities, negotiations and contract management.
  • Manage commercial, contractual, procurement and supply-related disputes and matters.
  • Maintain awareness of developments in laws and potential impacts on Rio Tinto’s business.
  • Liaise with other members of Rio Tinto’s Legal, Governance and Compliance & Ethics teams to promote and apply best legal practice.
  • Support digitalization, decarbonization, and other initiatives related to commercial and procurement activities, working closely with teams across Rio Tinto’s business.
  • Create, review and update legal templates.
  • Conduct legal training.
  • Manage external counsel.
