About The Position

This role is an exciting opportunity to help strengthen Ornge’s communications in Northern Ontario, where more than two thirds of patient transports take place. Based at Ornge’s Thunder Bay base, the Corporate Communications Officer – Northern Ontario will provide support to a variety of organizational initiatives related to communications, public awareness, education and community relations projects aimed at building community and public awareness, with a focus on Northern Ontario. The successful candidate will build key relationships with community organizations and stakeholders in Northern base communities (Kenora, Thunder Bay, Sioux Lookout, Moosonee, Timmins and Sudbury) and surrounding areas. Additionally, the role supports broader organizational communications initiatives related to social and digital media, media relations and internal communications.

Requirements

  • Post-secondary education (degree or diploma) in Communications-related disciplines such as public relations or journalism is required.
  • 2+ years’ experience in communications and/or community relations is required.
  • A valid driver’s license is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Technical expertise and experience in multimedia production is considered a strong asset.
  • Experience in a healthcare or aviation-related organization will be considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Develop community and stakeholder outreach strategy, calendar and plan.
  • Identify community events in Ornge’s interest, including career fairs, public events, trade shows, partnered events with community groups, etc., and plan for participation.
  • Coordinate special events and outreach activities.
  • Collaborate with Human Resources on recruitment-related initiatives.
  • Build and maintain strong and positive relationships with community groups including local emergency services, hospitals, Indigenous communities, schools and educational institutions.
  • Regularly travel to communities throughout the province, including Ornge base communities, and represent the organization among stakeholders and the general public.
  • Maintain display material and handout inventory.
  • Respond to questions from stakeholders and general public.
  • Facilitate and lead base tours, media events, and other face-to-face/virtual interactions.
  • Promote the organization as an integral part of Ontario’s healthcare system and an employer of choice.
  • Inform stakeholders, members of the local media, and the public on Ornge’s role and processes.
  • Capture multi-media at Ornge’s northern bases and communities, including staff profiles, patient stories, photography, videography, podcasts, etc.
  • Work with Corporate Communications colleagues to produce high quality content in line with Ornge’s social and digital media strategy, and distribute these via Ornge’s channels (website, intranet, social media platforms, etc.).
  • Support internal communications activities aimed at fostering a well-informed workplace among staff, with a particular focus on communication within Northern bases.
  • Work with Base Managers on internal communications initiatives.
  • Establish strong working connections with front line staff and help tell the story of their service to multiple audiences.
  • Collaborate and support other projects within the department, including media relations, social media, issues management, writing website content and other duties as assigned.
