About The Position

The Cook works under general supervision and performs moderately difficult duties preparing and cooking a variety of food items for the San Diego Zoo’s retail food service operations. The position reports to the Chef. Duties may also include serving food and beverages, cashier work, and coordinating or supervising other food service employees.

Requirements

• Culinary school and/or experience working in a full-service restaurant.
• Knowledge of food-service equipment and basic food handling, preparation, and cooking skills.
• Knowledge of proper preparation and cooking methods for a wide variety of food items.
• Knowledge of commercial kitchen equipment and utensils.
• Knowledge of sanitation and safety methods for food preparation and handling.
• Knowledge of basic inventory controls.
• Effective leadership skills.
• Ability to operate commercial equipment and utensils.
• Ability to understand recipes and menus; evaluate food condition and doneness; and determine decorations.
• Ability to understand and carry out instructions.
• Ability to keep simple records.

Responsibilities

• Serve orders for food and beverages.
• Prepare and cook menu items and other dishes.
• Follow food orders.
• Portion, arrange, and garnish food.
• May coordinate and supervise other food service employees.
• May serve food at food stands and perform cashier duties.
• Cook and bake food in large quantities.
• Supervise and train kitchen helpers.
