About The Position
The Cook performs a variety of moderately difficult duties under general supervision, preparing and cooking food items for the San Diego Zoo’s retail food service operations. The role reports to the Chef and is an hourly, part-time, non-exempt union position in San Diego, California. The hourly rate is $22.33. If selected, union fees and dues apply.
Requirements
- Culinary school and/or experience working in a full-service restaurant.
- Knowledge of culinary techniques and equipment, and basic food handling, preparation, and cooking skills.
- Knowledge of proper preparation and cooking methods for a wide variety of food items.
- Ability to use commercial kitchen equipment and utensils.
- Knowledge of sanitation and safety methods for food preparation and handling.
- Knowledge of basic inventory controls.
- Effective leadership skills.
- Ability to cook and bake food in large quantities.
- Ability to understand recipes and menus.
- Ability to evaluate food condition, doneness, and decorations.
- Ability to understand and carry out instructions.
- Ability to keep simple records.
- Ability to supervise and train kitchen helpers.
Responsibilities
- Serve food and beverage orders.
- Prepare and cook menu items and other dishes.
- Follow food orders.
- Portion, arrange, and garnish food.
- May coordinate and supervise other food service employees.
- May serve food at food stands and perform cashier duties.
