About The Position

The Maryland School for the Deaf provides an inclusive, language-rich environment for deaf and hard of hearing students from birth through age 21. Rooted in a bilingual education approach, we ensure full access to American Sign Language and English across comprehensive academic, extracurricular, and student life programs. In partnership with families and communities, we empower students to think critically and develop a sense of self and belonging. This is an 11-month, school-year position. This position does not work when school is closed during winter break, spring break, and during the summer months. GRADE SD 0008 LOCATION OF POSITION MSD, Columbia Campus, 8169 Old Montgomery Road, Ellicott City, MD 21043. Main Purpose of Job: MSD Cook II is an intermediate level of work in the Dietary Department of the Maryland School for the Deaf, Columbia Campus. The Cook II is responsible for the production and serving of meals in accordance with the facility's Food Safety Program and Wellness Policy; all Maryland School for the Deaf, Columbia Campus, and Dietary Department prescribed policies and procedures; and all applicable health and sanitation regulations and standards.

Requirements

  • Three years of experience in food preparation at a public or governmental establishment, such as a restaurant, hospital or comparable institution involving the cooking of meats and vegetables and the preparation of salads and beverages.
  • Candidates may substitute graduation from an accredited vocational/technical high school with a major in food service or a related field for up to two years of the required experience.
  • Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a non-commissioned officer in culinary classifications or food service specialty codes in the food preparation and serving field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Must be proficient in or willing to learn ASL.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds and stand for extended periods of time.
  • Serve Safe food handler certification preferred.
  • Candidates must be willing to become Serve Safe Certified.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares foods requiring both simple and complex preparation.
  • Assembles tray line and serve meals according to established scheduled daily menu, using correct portion sizes and techniques.
  • Cleans and sanitizes work areas and equipment.
  • Prepares food items such as vegetables, salads, meats, and beverages by baking, frying, broiling, steaming, and mixing in accordance with recipes and dietetic guidelines.
  • Applies good service principles and methods related to food handling, proper food storage, and temperature control.
  • Operates kitchen equipment and appliances, such as mixers, cookers, ovens, stoves, toasters, coffee urns, microwaves, and related equipment.
  • Cleans and maintains utensils and work area in accordance with applicable safety and sanitary standards.
  • Protects equipment, utensils, food, and other items from contamination, spoilage, and pilferage.
  • Keeps records of supplies used and number of persons served.
  • May train, assign, and review the work of Dietary Workers or Food Service Assistants in cooking techniques.
  • Performs other related duties, must be flexible to provide timely assistance for an efficient food service operation.
