About The Position

The Gretchen's House Controller works as a business partner with other members of the leadership team to ensure timely, accurate reporting of financial data. This is a full-time (40 hour/week) position, with a hybrid work schedule option. The role involves overseeing all day-to-day accounting operations, including monthly, quarterly, and annual reconciliation close processes, preparing and reviewing journal entries and reconciliations, and overseeing payroll processing. The Controller will also ensure GAAP-compliant financial statements, oversee Accounts Payable, assist center Directors with outstanding receivables, lead external audit processes for the 401K and workers compensation, and assist with income tax coordination. Additionally, the role involves developing and implementing improved policies, procedures, and controls, supporting company transition to Employee Owned Trust and process scaling, working with internal staff and outside vendors for regulatory compliance, and optimizing the Chart of Accounts. The Controller will also oversee benefits administration and ensure periodic enrollment audits. In financial reporting, the Controller will create monthly financial reports for the organization and its 9 childcare centers, prepare variance analysis narratives, attend monthly financial review meetings, and create special reports as needed. Budgeting responsibilities include developing and managing an inclusive annual budget creation project, reviewing budget-to-actuals, performing mid-year reforecasting, annually reviewing and documenting costing methodology, and preparing seasonally spread budgets for each center and the organization. Treasury management includes managing daily treasury needs, creating an investment policy for excess cash, developing and maintaining bank relationships, assisting with borrowings, managing authorized users on bank accounts, maintaining risk-management protocols, and developing a cash forecasting model. The Controller will supervise the Payroll & Benefits Processor and Accounting Assistant and act as backup for these roles. Other duties as may exist from time-to-time.

Requirements

  • 7-10 years of progressive experience and hands-on leadership of accounting for a mid-sized revenue organization
  • Grant financial management and accounting required
  • Experience assessing and updating accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls
  • Experience leading in change-management
  • Experience in multi-unit environments
  • Strong background in accounting and related IT platforms
  • Project management experience in assessing, implementing, and optimizing IT platforms
  • 3-5 years successful supervisory experience
  • A customer service leadership attitude

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all day-to-day accounting operations

  • Work with external broker and leadership to set benefit products for the coming year
  • Provide internal leadership with information for establishing pay increases for the coming year
  • Prepare seasonally spread budgets for each of the 9 centers as well as the organization overall
  • Prepare ad-hoc budgets to support internal decision making
  • Manage daily treasury needs including bank transfers to ensure account target balances are met while maximizing interest
  • Create an investment policy and procedures for excess cash
  • Develop and maintain relationships with banks
  • Assist with borrowings as may occur from time-to-time
  • Manage authorized users on bank accounts
  • Maintain optimal risk-management protocols
  • Develop and maintain a cash forecasting model
  • Supervise the Payroll & Benefits Processor and Accounting Assistant
  • Act as backup for the Payroll & Benefits Processor and Accounting Assistant
