About The Position

The Controller is responsible for overseeing all financial and accounting operations for a union steel erection company specializing in large-scale commercial structural steel projects, including 5k-20k-ton and larger steel packages. This role ensures accurate job cost tracking, production tracking, union payroll compliance, KPI development and implementation, contract billing, financial reporting, and strategic financial guidance to support profitable project execution. The Controller will be responsible for but not limited to: Oversee all accounting operations including general ledger accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and fixed assets. Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements. Develop and maintain accurate Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules. Manage cash flow forecasting and liquidity planning. Lead annual budgeting and financial forecasting processes. Coordinate with external CPA firm for year-end reviews, audits, and tax filings. Develop and prepare internal monthly reporting package for parent corporation. Maintain accurate job cost tracking for large commercial steel erection projects. Monitor labor productivity, equipment costs, subcontractor costs, and material variances. Support operations with key financial information and insight, candidate should have a basic understanding of the steel erection life cycle and process. Partner with Project Managers to review project financial performance. Analyze cost overruns, change orders, and margin projections and how they impact strategic financial initiatives. Ensure revenue recognition aligns ASC 606. Develop and implement KPI’s for senior management team. Manage weekly union payroll processing. Ensure compliance with union agreements including wage rates, fringes, benefits, and working dues. Oversee certified payroll reporting and prevailing wage compliance Coordinate union remittances and reporting requirements. Maintain compliance with collective bargaining agreements Billing & Contract Administration. Oversee preparation and submission of AIA progress billings Track retainage, lien waivers, and contract terms Monitor change order documentation and billing. Ensure compliance with general contractor and owner reporting requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA preferred).
  • 7+ years of accounting experience, with at least 3–5 years in construction accounting.
  • Experience in structural steel, specialty subcontracting, or heavy commercial construction strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of job cost accounting and WIP reporting.
  • Experience with union payroll and multi-state payroll compliance.
  • Familiarity with AIA billing processes and construction contracts.
  • Experience with construction accounting software (Sage 300 CRE, Viewpoint Vista, Foundation, or similar).
  • Strong analytical, leadership, and communication skills.
  • High attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines.
