Controller, Marketplace & Fintech

Plug Technologies Inc•Los Angeles, CA
•$140,000 - $180,000•Onsite

About The Position

Plug is hiring a Staff-level Controller to build and operate its accounting function. Plug is an automotive fintech startup whose platform enables consumers, dealers, and commercial partners to trade in, sell, and auction used electric vehicles. The company currently uses QuickBooks Online and an outsourced accounting team. This individual contributor role will own the close, lead the day-to-day work for the company’s first financial statement audit, and transition outsourced accounting work to internal or automated processes. The role reports to the VP, Accounting and has no direct reports for now. The accounting work supports vehicle purchases, consignments and auctions; consumer and lienholder funds held while titles are cleared; and a dealer financing program operated through a subsidiary. The Controller will ensure these operational flows are accurately reflected in the ledger and reported to a lender. The Controller will own the monthly GAAP close across Plug Technologies and its dealer subsidiary, including intercompany accounting and consolidation; develop the close calendar, reconciliations and accounting policies, subject to approval by the VP, Accounting; and manage vehicle inventory accounting and ASC 606 revenue recognition. The role will establish reconciliations and controls for consumer payouts, lienholder payoffs, title and escrow balances, and dealer settlements, automate daily matching, and resolve exceptions. It will also prepare monthly lender reporting, including borrowing base certificates, covenant calculations and supporting schedules. Additional responsibilities include running accounts payable through Bill.com, administering the corporate card program and expense policy, supporting daily cash positioning and the short-term forecast, coordinating outside tax and entity-filing providers, and directing the outsourced accounting team’s close work while bringing tasks in-house or automating them. The Controller will write technical accounting memos, lead the first audit’s day-to-day work, build a data room for Series B diligence, and use AI and the company’s data stack to automate reconciliations and close tasks. The position is onsite at Plug’s Sawtelle location, between Santa Monica and West Los Angeles. The role follows the close and audit calendar, with heavier hours expected around month-end, lender deadlines and fundraising. Compensation is a base salary of $140,000 to $180,000 plus equity, with the offer within the range dependent on experience and skills. Plug describes its culture as builder-oriented, fast-moving, data-driven, and characterized by independent work and high autonomy. The 12-month goals are to close the books within seven business days with full reconciliations; complete an audit and prepare a remediation plan for any findings; run Series B diligence using a data room built by the Controller; establish documented recurring controls and reconciliations for inventory, funds in transit, and lender reporting; and bring at least half of outsourced work in-house or automate it.
