This is a hands-on, experimental role for a forward-thinking student interested in automation, AI, and modern content management workflows. The Student Assistant will help design, test, and support automated workflows across acquisitions, cataloging, serials, and physical processing, combining technical scripting with real-world library operations. Requirements

  • UT Austin student enrolled in minimum of 6 credits for spring 2026 semester in Information Science/Studies, Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or a related field
  • Comfortable writing basic scripts (e.g., Python, JavaScript, or similar)
  • Familiarity with GitHub (cloning repos, committing changes, basic collaboration)
  • Comfort experimenting, iterating, and learning through hands-on problem solving
  • Ability to handle physical library materials carefully and consistently
  • Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with OCR tools or high-volume scanning workflows
  • Familiarity with APIs, data formats (CSV, JSON, XML), or interest in system integration
  • Interest in AI, automation, digital libraries, or content management systems
  • Exposure to library workflows (acquisitions, cataloging, serials, or processing)
  • Familiarity with Cloud services/Platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP)
  • Have sound Information Security mindset

Responsibilities

  • Scan books, CDs, LPs, and other information materials using OCR-enabled scanners
  • Support physical processing tasks (handling, labeling, barcoding, call number application) as part of automated workflows
  • Assist with AI-assisted metadata creation, validation, and cleanup
  • Write and maintain simple scripts to automate content management workflows
  • Support API integrations and batch data processing across library systems
  • Use GitHub to collaborate on scripts, track changes, and document workflows
  • Perform quality checks to ensure accuracy of scans, metadata, and system updates
  • Help document and improve workflows across acquisitions, cataloging, serials, and physical processing
