Content Designer

Perplexity•San Francisco, CA
•$240,000 - $300,000

About The Position

Perplexity is seeking a Content Designer to shape language across its products, including its web, mobile, desktop, and voice experiences. The role uses language to solve product problems across flows, naming, information architecture, error states, permissions, and situations where users need to trust what the product communicates. The designer will write individual pieces of copy and build systems that keep content consistent at scale. The Content Designer will sit on the Design Systems team and work closely with product designers, engineers, product managers, research, brand, and marketing. The role involves using AI-powered tools, understanding model behavior and how prompts and system instructions affect user-facing output, and defining and evaluating quality when that output is not fully deterministic.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of experience in content design, UX writing, or product design, shipping software at scale.
  • An excellent portfolio showing how language shaped product decisions, with clear before-and-after examples and an explanation of the candidate’s role.
  • Strong UX fundamentals, including interaction design, information architecture, usability, and accessibility.
  • Good product sensibility and judgment about what to build, what to cut, and what matters most to people.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, spanning precise interface copy, clear explanations, and confident naming.
  • Strong AI fluency, including hands-on experience writing prompts, working with LLMs, and judging AI-generated content quality.
  • Systems thinking and experience building content frameworks, style guides, or terminology that scale across teams.
  • Clear communication and the ability to explain content decisions and tradeoffs to designers, engineers, and leaders.
  • A strong focus on shipping great software.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience designing content for AI products, assistants, agents, or conversational interfaces.
  • Experience with prompt engineering, model evaluations, or collaborating with research teams on model behavior.
  • Experience across consumer and enterprise products, including admin, permissions, privacy, and billing flows.
  • Comfort working in code, such as editing strings, reviewing pull requests, or prototyping with AI tools.
  • Experience with localization and writing for global audiences.

Responsibilities

  • Design and write in-product language across web, mobile, desktop, and voice, including UI copy, flows, onboarding, notifications, empty states, errors, and in-product education.
  • Partner with product designers from the start of projects to shape flows, structure, information architecture, and language.
  • Name features and products, and own terminology, navigation labels, and taxonomies as the product grows.
  • Make complex AI and agent behavior understandable, including what the product is doing, why, what it cannot do, and when it needs user input.
  • Shape AI-generated content by writing and refining prompts and system instructions, and help define the voice and response style of in-product models.
  • Define content quality standards and help build evaluation criteria, datasets, and reviewer guidance for AI-generated content.
  • Build and maintain voice and tone guidelines, content patterns, and content guidance in the design system.
  • Use research, data, and experiments to test language and improve comprehension, activation, and task completion.
  • Partner with brand and marketing to align product language with the company’s external voice.
  • Work with internationalization partners to ensure the product reads well in supported languages.
  • Review copy in code and ship small language changes directly when that is the fastest path.
