About The Position

OpenAI is seeking a Content Designer for its Content Design team, with deep expertise in prompt engineering and AI evaluation, along with strong content design craft and product judgment. The role combines editorial judgment, product strategy, and technical implementation to create prompts, evaluations, and tools that help generate and improve content and messaging at scale. The primary focus is experiences that help people discover ChatGPT’s value, get started, and stay engaged, including notifications, with contributions to broader Content Design work as team needs evolve.

The position is based in San Francisco, California, under a hybrid work model requiring three days in the office per week. Relocation assistance is offered to new employees.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience in content design, content engineering, or a related discipline, with a track record of delivering work across complex product areas.
• Hands-on experience developing prompts for shipped generative AI experiences and understanding of model capabilities, limitations, and failure patterns.
• Experience designing and implementing content evaluation frameworks and validating how reliably they assess quality.
• Hands-on experience using code and APIs to build repeatable generation and evaluation workflows, and ability to partner with Engineering to integrate them into production.
• Strong writing, editorial judgment, and content strategy skills applicable across product experiences.
• Ability to turn qualitative and quantitative evidence into clear recommendations and demonstrate how work improved content quality, team effectiveness, or product outcomes.
• Ability to collaborate effectively across technical and nontechnical teams, bringing structure and clarity to ambiguous problems and evolving requirements.

Responsibilities

• Shape content strategy for experiences that help people discover ChatGPT’s value, get started, and return to meaningful uses of the product.
• Design, implement, and iterate on prompt frameworks that guide AI-generated product content and messaging.
• Define content quality standards and build evaluation systems, datasets, and reviewer guidance combining human judgment with automated assessments.
• Shape tools and workflows for generating, reviewing, and improving content across experiments and product experiences.
• Analyze model outputs and evaluation results to diagnose problems and improve content systems as models, products, and user needs evolve.
• Partner with product, engineering, design, research, and data science to connect content quality with user understanding, trust, engagement, and retention.
• Document reusable approaches and coach other Content Designers in developing prompts, defining evaluation criteria, and interpreting results.
