About The Position

Public Service Credit Union is seeking a detail-oriented and member-focused Consumer Loan Underwriter to join their lending team. This position is responsible for evaluating consumer loan applications, analyzing credit risk, and making sound lending decisions in accordance with established policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements. The Consumer Loan Underwriter plays a critical role in balancing the responsible extension of credit with exceptional member service while supporting PSCU's mission of improving members' financial well-being.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 1+ year of experience in a financial institution
  • Consumer lending or underwriting experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of lending regulations and compliance requirements.
  • Ability to analyze financial information and assess credit risk.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 applications, including Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, and SharePoint.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated integrity, professionalism, and strong work ethic.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Responsibilities

  • Review and underwrite consumer loan applications including auto loans, personal loans, home equities, and lines of credit.
  • Analyze credit reports, income documentation, debt-to-income ratios, loan-to-value ratios, and overall financial profiles.
  • Make lending decisions within assigned authority levels or recommend decisions to senior underwriters or managers when required.
  • Ensure compliance with internal policies, regulatory requirements (e.g., BSA, Fair Lending, ECOA, TILA), and secondary lending guidelines if applicable.
  • Communicate loan decisions clearly and effectively to internal staff and occasionally to members, offering alternative solutions when appropriate.
  • Collaborate with Branch staff to gather required documentation and provide guidance on loan structures.
  • Maintain accurate loan records and documentation in the loan origination system (LOS).
  • Support training and mentoring as needed.
  • Participate in quality reviews, audits, and process improvement initiatives.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
