About The Position

The Consumer Loan Underwriter's primary purpose is to review, analyze, and underwrite all consumer loan applications, including home equity loan requests received through our direct and indirect lending channels within delegated underwriting limits and authority in accordance with Federal and State Lending Laws and Regulations and Valley First Credit Union's Policies and Procedures. Review and analyze applications for all consumer loans submitted through our loan origination platform. Gather the necessary information to make a sound lending decision based on each applicant's credit profile and the Credit Union's Lending Policies and Procedures. Escalate loan requests outside of guidelines or approval parameters to Lending Management. Underwrite loan applications and approve, counter, or decline requests to extend credit within lending authority. Maintain knowledge of all consumer loan products and decision processes for direct and indirect loan products, including home equity loan programs. Communicate loan decisions with Member Service Specialists, Lending & Sales Advisors, and Consumer Loan Closers, including the ability to discuss loan denials, loan alternatives, and rate computation clearly, concisely, and courteously. Maintain relationships with dealer partners by following up with approved loans and answering any of their questions that come up during the origination process. Properly evaluate and recommend any exceptions to policy by presenting a well-thought-out analysis to Lending Management. Evaluates credit bureau reports, income documentation, collateral valuation reports, flood certifications, title information, and other factors relevant to underwriting consumer and home equity loans. Cross-qualify loan products when the opportunity presents itself. Recommend alterations or revisions to Lending Policies and Procedures as needed. Must comply with the Credit Union's policies and procedures, applicable laws and regulations, including but not limited to the Bank Secrecy Act, The Patriot Act, and the Office of Foreign Assets Control. Other duties as assigned by Lending leadership.

Requirements

  • Five or more years of similar or related lending experience, including time spent in preparatory positions.
  • A two-year college degree or completion of specialized course study at a business or trade school.
  • Technical aptitude to understand complex programs and applications.
  • Displays courtesy, tact, and diplomacy during personal contact with others inside and/or outside of the organization for purposes of giving or obtaining information, building relationships, or soliciting cooperation.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills.
  • Detail-oriented, organized, accurate and ability to adapt to change.
  • Excellent decision making and time management skills.
  • Well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to trouble-shoot problems and research capabilities of current or proposed products.
  • Exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
  • Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time.
  • The incumbent is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; typing; viewing a computer screen and reading.
  • Climb/descend stairs in an emergency situation.
  • Operate routine office equipment including personal computers, copy machines, mobile and landline phones, calculator and others as needed.
  • Maintain working on a computer for six to eight hours daily, on average.
  • Work extended hours if required or requested by management.
  • Regular, reliable and timely attendance.
