About The Position

SpaceX is hiring a Construction Superintendent, Fluid/Mechanical for its mobile construction team. The superintendent oversees foremen and a large self-performing fluid/mechanical crew building and installing systems at SpaceX sites, including launch sites, factories, test stands, and AI superclusters. The scope includes industrial HVAC, pipefitting and pipe welding, chilled water systems, cooling towers, chillers, condensers, CRAC and CRAH units, plumbing, and fire protection, as well as setting heavy mechanical equipment. The superintendent works on site, establishes expectations for safety, quality, schedule, and conduct, supports crews by resolving obstacles, and holds foremen and workers accountable. The position is part of a continuing sequence of construction assignments: the current assignment is in Memphis, Tennessee / Southaven, Mississippi, with future relocation to other U.S. construction sites. Per diem is provided while on assignment. The role participates in a 24/7 operation and may involve any shift, extended hours, holidays, rotating shifts, nights, or weekends; night-shift hours receive a differential. The work takes place in industrial environments and may involve noise, heavy equipment, excavations, energized electrical systems, physically demanding tasks, tight conditions, outdoor and indoor work, and work at heights. Candidates must be able to lift 25 pounds or more and perform the described duties, with or without reasonable accommodation. Pre-employment drug screening, random drug/alcohol testing, and pre- and post-employment background checks apply.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalency certificate.
  • At least 3 years leading fluid/mechanical construction teams, including supervision of foremen.
  • At least 3 years of direct hands-on experience with fluid/mechanical installations, including industrial HVAC, pipefitting, chilled water, plumbing, or fire protection.
  • Willingness to work any shift, extended hours, and/or holidays, including rotating shifts, nights, and/or weekends.
  • Willingness to travel to assigned projects and relocate to other U.S. construction sites as assignments change.
  • Willingness to work in industrial environments with exposure to noise, heavy equipment, excavations, and energized electrical systems.
  • Ability to lift 25 pounds or more and perform physically demanding tasks indoors or outdoors, in tight conditions and/or at heights, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Subject to pre-employment drug screening, random drug/alcohol testing, and pre-employment and post-employment background checks.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience leading large self-perform crews on industrial or mission-critical mechanical, piping, or fire-protection projects.
  • Direct hands-on experience with industrial processes or heavy mechanical projects.
  • Postsecondary diploma or degree in construction management, mechanical engineering, or a related field.
  • Track record on data centers, hyperscale facilities, or similar mission-critical mechanical construction.
  • Familiarity with Memphis-area building codes, IMC, IPC, NFPA 13, and industrial permitting.
  • Experience with Procore, AutoCAD, Bluebeam, MS Project, or similar tools on complex infrastructure work.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical critical path, sequencing, and coordination with electrical, structural, and civil trades through commissioning.
  • Understanding of data center cooling and fire-protection requirements, including chilled water, cooling towers, CRAC and CRAH units, and systems designed for 24/7 operation.
  • History of leading diverse crews to deadlines while maintaining collaboration and safety.
  • Working knowledge of lockout/tagout, hot work, and pressure testing, with a record of building a safety culture on regulated sites.
  • Strong problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills on technically complex mechanical, plumbing, and fire-protection work.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Teams, and Project.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee foremen and, through them, a large self-perform fluid/mechanical crew installing industrial HVAC, piping, chilled water systems, cooling towers, chillers, condensers, CRAC and CRAH units, plumbing, and fire protection, including pipe welding and setting heavy mechanical equipment.
  • Set expectations for safety, quality, schedule, and conduct, and hold foremen and crews accountable when expectations are not met.
  • Remove obstacles to crew productivity, including issues involving materials, access, sequencing, trade coordination, and decisions.
  • Recommend promotions, role changes, and corrective action based on performance.
  • Plan and run the night-shift assignment, including extended hours, as part of a 24/7 operation.
  • Ensure fluid and mechanical installations meet SpaceXSI quality and reliability standards, code requirements, and system-integrity requirements for data center cooling and fire protection.
  • Track daily progress and maintain logs, red-line drawings, and as-built documentation for mechanical, plumbing, and fire-protection systems.
  • Develop and maintain an aggressive construction schedule and deliver work on time and within budget.
  • Champion the safety program and a zero-incident culture for pressure piping, hot work, rigging, heavy equipment setting, and work at heights.
  • Resolve on-site material delays, technical conflicts, sequencing issues, and trade-coordination problems while protecting system integrity and code compliance.
  • Inspect work for compliance with local regulations, mechanical, plumbing, and fire-protection codes, safety protocols, and SpaceX quality standards.
  • Report progress, fluid/mechanical construction metrics, and risks to senior leadership.
  • Relocate with the mobile team as assignments change, beginning in Memphis, Tennessee / Southaven, Mississippi.

Benefits

  • Per diem while on assignment.
  • Shift differential for hours worked during off-nominal hours when assigned to night shift.
