About The Position

The Construction Project Accountant is responsible for managing the accounting and financial activities associated with assigned construction projects. This position works closely with Project Managers, Development Teams, vendors and the Accounting department to ensure project financial information is accurate, timely and properly recorded.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, and the accounting implications of lease and equipment transactions.
  • Experience managing month-end close, reconciliations, financial reporting, and internal controls.
  • Prior experience in performing audits and the ability to lead teams through a successful audit/tax season.
  • High attention to detail, strong organizational discipline, and the ability to maintain accurate records in an asset-intensive environment.
  • Ability to communicate accounting concepts clearly to non-accounting business partners and operational leaders.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to balance technical accuracy and practical business needs.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects, manage competing deadlines, and operate effectively in a high-growth environment.
  • Maintains strong documentation, process discipline, and internal control awareness.
  • Demonstrates adaptability as systems, processes, and business needs evolve.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with construction or real estate accounting preferred.
  • Experience with Viewpoint Vista and Procore preferred.
  • CPA or CPA Candidate

Responsibilities

  • Manage the day-to-day accounting activities for assigned construction projects.
  • Review and maintain accurate project budgets, costs, commitments, and forecasts.
  • Record and review project-related expenses to ensure they are coded to the appropriate job, cost code, and general ledger account.
  • Monitor project costs and identify unusual, missing, or potentially incorrect transactions.
  • Reconcile project costs and general ledger accounts on a regular basis.
  • Assist Project Managers with understanding project financial information and resolving accounting-related questions.
  • Review commitments, purchase orders, subcontractor costs, and change orders for accuracy and completeness.
  • Prepare and/or review monthly owner and subcontractor pay applications.
  • Ensure project costs and supporting documentation are recorded timely to support monthly billings.
  • Coordinate with Project Managers and other internal teams to obtain required documentation and approvals.
  • Review billings for accuracy and ensure they are consistent with contract terms, budgets, and project progress.
  • Track retainage, contract balances, and outstanding project receivables.
  • Review and process project-related invoices and ensure proper coding and approvals.
  • Monitor vendor and subcontractor accounts for accuracy and completeness.
  • Assist with resolving invoice discrepancies and vendor questions.
  • Prepare project-related customer invoices and monitor outstanding receivables.
  • Assist with collection efforts and resolution of outstanding project balances.
  • Complete assigned month-end close responsibilities for construction projects.
  • Prepare and review account and project reconciliations.
  • Assist with work-in-progress (WIP) reporting and analysis.
  • Review project financial results and identify variances between actual costs, budget, and forecast.
  • Assist with accruals, prepaid expenses, retainage, and other month-end entries.
  • Provide accurate project financial information for monthly reporting.
  • Partner with Project Managers to provide financial insight and support informed project decisions.
  • Communicate financial issues, variances, and potential risks to management in a timely manner.
  • Help Project Managers understand project budgets, costs, commitments, and remaining funds.
  • Work collaboratively with the Accounting, Development, Construction, and Operations teams.
  • Assist with process improvements and implementation of new accounting systems and procedures.
  • Maintain organized and accurate project documentation.
