About The Position

S&ME is searching for motivated, full-time entry-level or experienced Construction Materials Engineering Technicians to join our Construction Services group. You'll be based locally for project work in the Roxboro area but report to our Raleigh, NC office. As a Construction Materials Engineering Technician, you'll play a vital role in ensuring construction projects, from local eateries to major sports venues, are built with quality and safety at the forefront by testing specific building materials such as soil, concrete, asphalt and more. Whether you're new to the field or bring years of expertise, you'll receive hands-on training, mentorship, and opportunities to advance. Seasoned professionals can take on leadership roles, guiding projects and mentoring colleagues.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • 0-2 years relevant experience testing soil, concrete, or asphalt (for Associate Technician/Technician I)
  • Strong English communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Basic math proficiency, including understanding of measurements and units of weight
  • The understanding of a fluctuating schedule and interest in occasional travel
  • Have a valid United States driver's license or an International Driving Permit (IDP) for driving in the US, with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to operate a company-assigned vehicle safely (Truck or SUV)
  • Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Comfortable with walking over rough, uneven terrain and standing (potentially up to 12 hours a day)
  • Comfortable with routinely lifting and carrying 40-50lbs (field/laboratory samples and equipment)
  • Comfortable working outside of normal business hours and traveling (typically out-of-town and/or overnight) as project needs arise
  • Candidates must comply with our Fleet Management, Substance Policy, and Reference Check requirements.
  • Only candidates with valid employment eligibility (I-9) will be considered.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate degree in a related field preferred for advanced levels
  • 2+ years of relevant experience or equivalent with an Associate's degree (for Technician II)
  • 3+ years of relevant experience or equivalent with an Associate's degree (for Technician III)
  • 5+ years of relevant experience (for Technician IV)
  • Prior leadership or mentoring experience is a plus (for Technician IV)

Responsibilities

  • Begin with learning how to test concrete, then expand into soils, asphalt, and masonry as you grow.
  • Perform field and lab tests, maintain equipment, and ensure accurate, complete reporting on your test results.
  • Conduct inspections per IBC codes, document findings, and manage data using Metafield®.
