About The Position

S&ME is seeking a motivated and hard-working entry-level Construction Materials Engineer to join our Construction Services team in Charlotte, North Carolina. This role is crucial for ensuring the integrity and safety of construction projects by evaluating and confirming the quality of materials used. Under the guidance of a Licensed Engineer, you will manage field investigations, log soil samples, perform engineering calculations/designs, and assist in preparing proposals and reports. S&ME has a 50-year history of delivering innovative geotechnical, civil, environmental, and construction material testing services across various industries.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering or a similar engineering field.
  • 0-2 years of experience in construction materials testing/inspections of soil, concrete, masonry, and/or asphalt.
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) certification, or on track to obtain it.
  • Desire and willingness to obtain at least one (1) industry certification within 6 months of employment.
  • Basic math and communication skills (speaking, reading, and writing) using the English language.
  • Willing and able to perform the physical demands of the position with the use of company-provided Personal Protective Equipment.
  • Willing and able to work the majority of the time outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Willing and able to walk over rough, uneven terrain and stand for potentially long periods.
  • Willing and able to routinely lift and carry 40-50lbs (field/laboratory samples and equipment).
  • Willing and able to work outside of normal business hours when necessary.
  • Must comply with Fleet Management, Substance Policy, and Reference Check requirements.
  • Must have valid employment eligibility (I-9).
  • Visa assistance is not available.

Responsibilities

  • Perform tests and oversee special inspections of materials such as soil, concrete, asphalt, and others to ensure they meet project specifications and industry standards.
  • Analyze construction plans and specifications to verify alignment with project goals before conducting field observations.
  • Record and manage field activities, documenting detailed observations and test results using Metafield® or other management systems daily.
  • Assist in drafting reports and proposals for smaller projects, ensuring thorough and accurate assessments and documentation.
  • Interact with management, contractors, and clients to maintain project transparency and provide regular updates on progress.
