About The Position

S&ME is seeking a motivated and hard-working Entry-Level Construction Materials Engineer to join our Construction Services team in Charlotte, North Carolina. This role is crucial for ensuring the integrity and safety of construction projects by evaluating and confirming the quality of materials used. Under the guidance of a Licensed Engineer, you will conduct field investigations, log soil samples, perform engineering calculations and designs, and assist in preparing proposals and reports, while supporting projects and clients.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering or a similar engineering field.
0-2 years of experience in construction materials testing/inspections of soil, concrete, masonry, and/or asphalt.
Engineer in Training (EIT) certification, or on track to obtain it.
Desire and willingness to obtain at least one (1) industry certification within 6 months of employment.
Basic math and communication skills (speaking, reading, and writing) using the English language.
Ability to perform the physical demands of the position with the use of company-provided Personal Protective Equipment.
Willingness to work the majority of the time outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Willingness to walk over rough, uneven terrain and stand for potentially long periods.
Ability to routinely lift and carry 40-50lbs (field/laboratory samples and equipment).
Willingness to work outside of normal business hours when necessary.
Must comply with Fleet Management, Substance Policy, and Reference Check requirements.
Must have valid employment eligibility (I-9).

Responsibilities

Perform tests and oversee special inspections of materials such as soil, concrete, asphalt, and others to ensure they meet project specifications and industry standards.
Analyze construction plans and specifications to verify alignment with project goals before conducting field observations.
Document detailed observations and test results during project execution, using Metafield® or other management systems daily for efficient data handling and coordination.
Assist in drafting reports and proposals for smaller projects, ensuring thorough and accurate assessments and documentation.
Interact with management, contractors, and clients to maintain project transparency and provide regular updates on progress.
