About The Position

S&ME is seeking a motivated and hard-working Entry-Level Construction Materials Engineer to join our Construction Services team in Raleigh, North Carolina. This role is ideal for recent graduates or mid-level engineers looking to grow their careers. As an entry-level Construction Materials Engineer, you will be crucial in ensuring the integrity and safety of construction projects by evaluating and confirming the quality of materials used. Under the supervision of a Licensed Engineer, your responsibilities will include managing field investigations, logging soil samples, performing engineering calculations and designs, assisting in proposal and report preparation, and supporting various projects and clients. S&ME has a 50-year history of delivering innovative geotechnical, civil, environmental, and construction material testing services across diverse industries.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering or a similar engineering field.
  • 0-2 years of experience in construction materials testing/inspections of soil, concrete, masonry, and/or asphalt.
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) certification, or on track to obtain it.
  • Desire and willingness to obtain at least one (1) industry certification within 6 months of employment.
  • Basic math and communication skills (speaking, reading, and writing) using the English language.
  • Ability to perform the physical demands of the position with the use of company-provided Personal Protective Equipment.
  • Willingness to work the majority of the time outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to walk over rough, uneven terrain and stand for potentially long periods.
  • Ability to routinely lift and carry 40-50lbs (field/laboratory samples and equipment).
  • Willingness to work outside of normal business hours when necessary.
  • Must comply with Fleet Management, Substance Policy, and Reference Check requirements.
  • Must have valid employment eligibility (I-9).

Responsibilities

  • Perform tests and oversee special inspections of materials such as soil, concrete, asphalt, and others to ensure they meet project specifications and industry standards.
  • Analyze construction plans and specifications to verify alignment with project goals before conducting field observations.
  • Document detailed observations and test results during project execution, using Metafield® or other management systems daily for efficient data handling and coordination.
  • Assist in drafting reports and proposals for smaller projects, ensuring thorough and accurate assessments and documentation.
  • Interact with management, contractors, and clients daily to maintain project transparency and provide regular updates on progress.
