About The Position

The Construction Energy Marshal develops and enforces the Project Energy Control Plan for data center infrastructure. The role manages energy isolation and lockout/tagout (LOTO), verifies zero-energy states before work, coordinates energization and commissioning activities, and helps protect operating data halls during campus expansions. The marshal oversees safety, documentation, redundancy validation, and energy-status communications throughout construction and testing.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; a technical or trade background is strongly preferred.
  • At least 8 years of construction supervision experience in mission-critical or data center environments.
  • Extensive experience with electrical and mechanical commissioning of critical systems.
  • Strong understanding of redundancy concepts, system interdependencies, and sequencing.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, single-line diagrams, and commissioning scripts.
  • Demonstrated leadership in safety-critical environments.
  • Direct experience delivering Tier III or Tier IV data centers.
  • Familiarity with data center commissioning best practices.
  • OSHA 30, NFPA 70E, or equivalent safety certifications.
  • Mission-critical mindset and attention to detail.
  • Strong coordination across multiple MEP disciplines.
  • Calm, decisive leadership during high-risk testing events.
  • Excellent communication with owners, engineers, and commissioning teams.
  • Ability to manage fast-paced schedules and phased turnovers.

Nice To Haves

  • Technical or trade background.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and enforce the Project Energy Control Plan for data center infrastructure.
  • Manage LOTO for medium-voltage gear (5kV–35kV), switchgear and switchboards, UPS systems and battery strings, generators and paralleling gear, CRAC/CRAH units, and mechanical plants.
  • Verify zero-energy state before work begins; maintain switching logs and isolation tracking.
  • Lead energization sequencing for utility tie-ins, generator startups, UPS static-bypass transitions, A/B system commissioning, mechanical equipment, and live campus expansions.
  • Coordinate with utility providers and owner operations teams to prevent unplanned impacts to existing live data halls.
  • Review and approve Method of Procedure (MOP) documents and Energized Work Permits; partner with the Commissioning Authority to validate energization boundaries.
  • Confirm labeling and arc-flash studies are in place before energization, and manage the transition from temporary to permanent power.
  • Oversee black-building tests and integrated systems testing (IST); validate N, N+1, and 2N redundancy integrity.
  • Conduct daily field audits of LOTO compliance, enforce NFPA 70E and PPE requirements, and stop work when energy conditions are unsafe.
  • Lead energy-hazard pre-task planning and monitor battery safety, fuel systems, and stored-energy risks.
  • Maintain the master energization matrix, real-time energized-system status, and red-line one-line diagrams.
  • Issue daily energy-status reports to project leadership and the client.
  • Assist with documenting energy-related incidents and near misses.

Benefits

  • Health insurance, including medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • 401(k) plan.
  • Paid sick leave, depending on work location.
