About The Position

Wawanesa is looking for an exceptional candidate to fill the role of Senior Actuarial Consultant within our growing Pricing Research and Development team. As a member of the Pricing R&D team, you will focus on improving the timeliness of our pricing by enhancing claims cost models, collaborating closely with pricing actuaries to leverage models to optimize rate changes for our members. You will act as a subject matter expert in actuarial methods and mentor actuarial staff to help them better understand these methods and their use. Note: we are looking for multiple levels for Actuarial Consultant or Senior Actuarial Consultant positions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related field.
  • Over six years of actuarial experience is an asset.
  • Possession of FCAS designation is an asset.
  • Experience with machine learning modeling or other pricing modeling methods and software.
  • Ability to translate problem-solving methods and insights into various computer languages.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of actuarial science, mathematics, probability, statistics, financial and business principles to insurance problems.
  • Understanding of database systems and how to interpret and extract data from them.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and ability to adapt the level of communication complexity to the target audience.
  • Good team player and ability to mobilize others when appropriate.

Nice To Haves

  • More than six years of actuarial experience.
  • Possession of FCAS designation.

Responsibilities

  • Research, extract, and manipulate complex data from relevant sources, and assess data quality.
  • Support the business and the entire team by performing analyses/reviews and responding to ad-hoc requests or participating in special projects in a timely manner with minimal peer and manager support. Evaluate procedures and processes, and recommend alternatives or improvements.
  • Evaluate current processes to find elements that can be made more efficient.
  • Identify opportunities for automation of repetitive tasks and implementation of advanced techniques while ensuring ethical and responsible application of solutions.
  • Develop approaches for different possible solutions with minimal manager support.
  • Recommend actions to take in response to industry news and trends.
  • Encouraged to represent Wawanesa in industry research, professional standards, and technical working groups, and share knowledge internally with relevant teams.
  • Engage in continuous professional development and experiential learning to gain cross-functional knowledge, technical skills, and mastery of competencies.
  • Focus learning activities on bringing new knowledge and skills to the team and sharing that new expertise with team members.
  • Provide periodic project updates to stakeholders. Anticipate obstacles and report them in advance.
  • Propose possible solutions to obstacles.
  • Lead projects from start to finish, including training and documentation. Delegates effectively, including follow-up when necessary. Includes implementation of the final product.
  • Actively contribute to the mentoring, training, and development of actuarial analysts.
  • Actively research to provide feedback, direction, and development advice to help others excel in their current or future professional responsibilities.
  • Provide cross-functional advice and leadership in areas of expertise and find ways to add value.
  • Translate problem-solving methods and insights into various computer languages.
  • Establish timelines for projects and manage multiple tasks concurrently and in a timely manner, keeping the manager proactively updated on progress.
  • Ask effective questions to obtain detailed and relevant information.
