Configuration Data Manager III

Blue Origin•Huntsville, AL

About The Position

The Configuration Data Manager III (Configurator) is part of Blue Origin’s Engines business unit and owns the product configuration baseline throughout the system lifecycle, from concept and design through production, testing, and final customer delivery. The role maintains engineering Bill of Materials (eBOM) integrity, tracks as-built and as-delivered configuration records for serialized units, and administers change control so engineering, manufacturing, quality, supply chain, and program management work from an authoritative product definition. The position also works with AI developers to create tools and processes that improve engineering efficiency in product development. The role interfaces with PLM/PDM systems and cross-functional teams to maintain synchronized product structures, support manufacturing and supplier configuration traceability, and verify delivered hardware and software against approved baselines. It participates in program reviews and audits, develops reporting and automated tools, and trains and mentors staff in configuration management processes and standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • At least 5 years of configuration-management experience on complex hardware development programs in aerospace, defense, industrial systems, or comparable fields.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with PLM/PDM tools such as PTC Windchill, Agile, ENOVIA, Teamcenter, or equivalent.
  • Working knowledge of EIA-649, MIL-HDBK-61, and/or AS9100 quality-management requirements.
  • Experience owning eBOM structures and managing change-control workflows in a multidisciplinary engineering environment.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills, with attention to data accuracy and configuration traceability.
  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens or nationals, U.S. permanent residents, or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as refugees or granted asylum.
  • Ability to complete the standard background check required for all positions.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience developing automated tools or scripts, such as Python, VBA, or SQL, for BOM analysis, reporting, or data reconciliation.
  • Familiarity with Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and digital-thread or digital-twin initiatives.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing execution systems (MES) and integration with PLM/PDM for as-built tracking.
  • CMPIC or equivalent configuration-management certification.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, maintain, and control engineering Bill of Materials (eBOM) across product structures from concept through delivery, ensuring accuracy and traceability.
  • Develop and maintain tools and processes for capturing and tracking as-built and as-delivered BOMs and configuration records for serialized units.
  • Establish and maintain part-numbering, document-numbering, serialization, lot/serial effectivity, and revision-control standards.
  • Own and administer the Configuration Management Plan (CMP) in compliance with applicable standards.
  • Manage Engineering Change Requests (ECRs), Engineering Change Orders (ECOs), and Engineering Change Notices (ECNs), including initiation, tracking, coordination, and disposition.
  • Chair or support the Configuration Control Board (CCB) and coordinate cross-functional review and approval of proposed changes.
  • Perform Configuration Status Accounting (CSA), maintaining auditable records of configuration baselines, changes, waivers, deviations, and change history.
  • Plan and execute Functional Configuration Audits (FCA) and Physical Configuration Audits (PCA) to verify delivered hardware and software against the approved design baseline.
  • Interface with PLM/PDM systems to maintain data integrity and synchronization across eBOM, manufacturing BOM (mBOM), and service BOM (sBOM) structures.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing engineering to translate eBOM into mBOM, resolve discrepancies, and capture manufacturability requirements.
  • Manage interface control documentation (ICDs) and support interface configuration control with customers, subcontractors, and partner organizations.
  • Support supplier and subcontractor configuration-management compliance by reviewing deliverable data packages and verifying delivered-part and assembly traceability against approved drawings and specifications.
  • Participate in Integrated Product Teams (IPTs) and program reviews, including PDR, CDR, PRR, and FRR, as the configuration-management subject matter expert.
  • Develop dashboards, reports, and automated tooling to show BOM health, change backlog, anomalies, waiver/deviation status, and configuration-baseline currency.
  • Train and mentor engineering and operations staff on configuration-management processes, tools, data standards, and best practices.
  • Support customer and internal quality audits by preparing objective-evidence packages and responding to findings.
  • Work with AI developers to create tools and processes that increase engineering efficiency in product development.
