About The Position

Chadwick School seeks an energizing, enthusiastic computer science teacher to help lead and grow its program, primarily in the Upper School, with opportunities to teach in the Middle School. The teacher brings strong content expertise and an understanding of effective teaching and learning, designing hands-on, project-based experiences in which students build, test, and explain their work. The role grounds students in enduring computer science fundamentals while keeping the curriculum current as computing evolves, helping students create with technology and adapt to future developments. Using backward design, the teacher creates purposeful learning experiences and helps shape a coherent pathway from Middle School coding experiences through advanced Upper School study. The teacher welcomes students of every background and experience level. Faculty members also serve as advisors, participate in school life beyond the classroom, and engage in ongoing professional growth.

Requirements

  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English.
  • A student-centered approach to computer science teaching emphasizing conceptual understanding, problem-solving, creativity, and clear communication.
  • Familiarity with emerging areas of computing, such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, data science, physical computing, and robotics.
  • Commitment to ongoing learning as the computing field evolves.
  • Ability to meet the stated work environment and physical requirements, including lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs.
  • Required TB assessment and Livescan background check.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Strong computer science background, including proficiency in widely used programming languages and experience teaching or supporting AP-level coursework.
  • Previous experience teaching Upper School computer science or a related field.
  • Industry, engineering, or research experience.

Responsibilities

  • Teach 3–4 sections of Upper School computer science, including AP and Post-AP courses.
  • Lead a Middle School co-curricular offering, such as coding or engineering, to spark early interest and support the Upper School program.
  • Apply principles of backward design (UbD) to course and unit curriculum.
  • Collaborate with colleagues on curriculum aligned to shared learning outcomes, skill progressions, and essential questions, and keep course offerings current as the field evolves.
  • Design hands-on, project-based learning that develops algorithmic thinking, abstraction, problem decomposition, testing, and debugging.
  • Use instructional techniques such as pair programming, code walkthroughs, peer review, and design journals to make student thinking visible.
  • Introduce emerging areas of computing, including artificial intelligence, data science, and engineering design, and guide thoughtful, ethical, and transparent use of new tools.
  • Engage students in discussions about technology’s social and ethical implications, including bias, privacy, security, and responsible innovation.
  • Support students in developing confidence, persistence, creativity, and flexibility as computational thinkers and builders.
  • Create an inclusive classroom environment grounded in mutual respect and rapport, incorporating anti-bias practices that broaden participation and belonging in computing.
  • Use shared assessment and grading practices to assess, record, and provide feedback on student learning and next steps, including approaches suited to code, projects, and process.
  • Contribute actively and positively to school life, including through co-curricular programs, coaching, and advising.
  • Submit grades and student comments on time and as instructed.
  • Keep information systems up to date, including Google Classrooms, calendars, and gradebooks.
  • Attend relevant department and faculty meetings and school events, including orientation and training, professional development, student orientations, back-to-school night, parent-teacher conferences, assemblies, and graduation.
  • Communicate promptly and professionally with students, families, and colleagues.
  • Cover classes for absent colleagues as requested.
  • Supervise students as assigned, including chaperoning, lunchtime supervision, and study hall.
  • Read and follow employment policies in the Employee Handbook and academic policies in the relevant division Handbook.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
