About The Position

The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) is seeking a Computer Information Systems instructor for Los Angeles Valley College (LAVCC). LAVCC is a two-year community college in the San Fernando Valley, part of the LACCD. It serves over 20,000 students from diverse backgrounds, offering strong transfer, transitional, and career programs. The college is committed to student success, works with local high schools for transition, and provides training programs for local employers. LAVCC offers more than 200 credit and noncredit programs, including associate degrees for transfer, a bachelor's degree program, and short-term certificates. It is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges and is a Hispanic-Serving Institution. The Computer Science and Information Systems Department has two full-time faculty and about 12 adjunct faculty, with a curriculum focused on cybersecurity and programming. LAVCC is committed to being an antiracist institution and promoting equity and social change.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree and two (2) years of professional experience directly related to the teaching assignment; OR Associate’s degree and six (6) years of professional experience directly related to the teaching assignment; Or The Equivalent.
Demonstrate a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Nice To Haves

Advanced education beyond the minimum required, research experience, and possession of an excellent academic record that indicates a strong background in computer information systems.
At least four years of work experience in computer programming, script writing, server-side coding, cloud computing, cyber and cloud security, information compliance, or data analytics.
Industry-recognized cybersecurity certification, for example in CompTIA Security+, Systems Security Certified Practitioner (SSCP), GIAC Security Essentials Certification (GSEC), Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH), GIAC Certified Incident Handler (GCIH), Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA), Certified Information Security Manager (CISM), and/or Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP).
Experience teaching computer information systems in a community college or other college setting.
Experience or interest in web enhancing and/or teaching online courses and ability to use technology.
Ability to set specific learning outcomes and objectives and measure achieved results.
Commitment to a career in a diverse, student-centered Department and College.
Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college faculty, staff, and students, including those with physical or learning disabilities as it relates to differences in learning styles.
Knowledge of equity-centered educational research on best practices to support the success of Latinx, Black, Indigenous, and other students of color.
Ability to create a safe and welcoming environment for all students, including those with diverse sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions.
Experience developing and maintaining partnerships with industry to support workforce development, internships, apprenticeships, advisory board engagement, and student employment opportunities.
Grant writing and project implementation experience.
Success at initiating, executing and following up on projects in a timely manner.
Commitment to maintaining a current knowledge of recent developments in computer information systems.
Commitment to execute extracurricular responsibilities within the Department and College.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Excellent organizational skills.

Responsibilities

Teaching the regular load, as defined by the collective bargaining agreement, computer information systems courses and holding regular office hours.
Planning, developing, and implementing course curricula, as well as updating course materials and course outlines of record.
Contributing to the development and assessment of student learning outcomes.
Cultural responsiveness in interactions with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
Completing and submitting required documents in a timely manner.
Participating in mandated projects, such as Program Review.
Participating in department and campus committees and activities.
Participating in professional development and maintaining current knowledge in the discipline.
Performing other academic duties and responsibilities as assigned.
