About The Position

Potatoes USA, the nation’s official potato marketing and research organization, is searching for a full-time Compliance Accountant to join our team in downtown Denver. As representatives of U.S. potato growers and importers, our mission is simple: to strengthen the demand for potatoes. But not just a few specific types. No, we work day in and day out to fuel demand for ALL forms and types of potatoes: fresh table stock, chipping, frozen, dehydrated, seed potatoes – pretty much every potato you can think of (except for the sweet ones). The Compliance Accountant is ideal for someone with entry-level experience in accounting who has a positive attitude and is eager to learn and collaborate with the accounting team. The primary responsibility is to oversee accounts receivable and ensure assessments are reported and paid accurately. Assist and correspond with clients, customers, and vendors consistent with the mission and vision of the organization. This position requires strong attention to detail, effective communication skills, and must be a self-starter. The work schedule is M-Th 8:00am-5:00pm and Friday 8:00am – 1:30pm, with an opportunity to work remotely Wednesdays and Fridays.

Requirements

  • At minimum, an associate’s degree in accounting or 3-5 years’ equivalent business experience
  • Basic understanding of accounting and/or auditing principles
  • Must be comfortable calling handlers to discuss sensitive financial matters
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Good with basic math concepts
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Applications.
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills and follow-up skills
  • Must be a collaborative, team player

Responsibilities

  • Process daily cash receipts
  • Maintain handler accounts and prepare reports
  • Monthly balancing of assessment funds
  • Work closely with state managers on compliance related issues
  • Regularly review external listings to identify new handlers
  • Research and calculate seed certification from state collections to determine amounts handlers owe in assessments
  • Invoice and collect outstanding assessments
  • Identify delinquent accounts through reviews and exception reports
  • Prepare and mail new handler packets
  • Input and/or upload daily assessment receipts into handler accounting software
  • Work with staff to collect on accounts receivable over 30 days old
  • Work closely with USDA to collect on delinquent accounts
  • Other duties as assigned
