About The Position

These positions will focus on working with commuter students, particularly first- and second-year students, engaging students both within the Commuter Corner as well as on campus. These positions are generally applied for and go through an interview process. Specific duties include but are not limited to: Improve retention rates by forming meaningful relationships with students. Reach out to and maintain contact with at-risk students through emails, texts, phone calls and individual meetings. Plan and implement programs that promote student engagement; this includes developing, promoting, and implementing the event as well as any necessary follow-up afterward. Work most of the hours in Commuter Corner and help maintain the Adult and Veteran lounge, making sure supplies are stocked, the areas are clean and, most importantly, interacting with and supporting the students. Provide support and assistance to the commuter students by working designated hours in the Commuter Corner, answering questions regarding academics (registration, classes, majors…), and connecting students with appropriate services to address their various needs (counseling, Student Success Center, Stem/Writing and Research Center…). Foster a welcoming environment in the Commuter Corner so that all students feel comfortable regardless of their identities. Celebrate the diversity of the commuter population, encouraging dialog and celebrations to reflect this great diversity. Create and implement strategies to address various concerns such as low GPA, little to no engagement, and retention concerns. Maintain the overall cleanliness of the Commuter Corner, restocking supplies as needed. Collaborate with other departments to enhance the student’s experience and broaden their contact outside of Commuter Life (Mission and Ministry, Student Success Center, RWC…). Participate in events such as Open House, Welcome Week, and any other welcoming or recruiting events as needed.

Requirements

  • Must have completed at least one semester at Gannon
  • Have a minimum GPA of 2.5
  • Be a full-time student
  • Availability must be during business hours, M-F, 8am-4:30pm, particularly on Tuesdays/Thursdays from 11a.m. – noon

Nice To Haves

  • Should be a full-time undergraduate commuter student (does not live in Gannon housing)
  • Has been active in Commuter Life, having attended programs and possessing a familiarity of how the department functions
  • Hiring preference will be given to students who are eligible for Federal Work Study. If you are hired, your continued employment may be contingent on you remaining eligible for Federal Work Study.
