About The Position

At the Calgary Drop-In and Rehab Centre (the DI), we are dedicated to serving our community with kindness. Our mission – to work with community to end homelessness, one person at a time – goes beyond providing immediate support; we strive to create an environment where individuals can regain their confidence and rebuild their lives. We are more than an emergency shelter. Our dedicated team of staff and volunteers work tirelessly to ensure that everyone who walks through our doors feels welcomed, respected, and valued. What sets us apart is our holistic approach to support. We offer not only safe and comfortable accommodation and meals but also access to essential resources such as health and recovery services, and housing supports. All of our programs, including emergency shelter, are low-barrier, trauma-informed, housing-focused, and recovery-oriented, aimed at supporting Calgary’s most vulnerable citizens. And our doors are always open. Reporting to the Coordinator, Community Engagement, this position will support the Community Engagement component of the pillar with tasks that include managing volunteers both at main shelter and our donation centre, help with day-to-day administrative tasks, as well as act as a DI ambassador at events. This position will also support in areas of fund development through stewardship activities and solicitations for gift-in-kind donations for our annual fundraising events. Ongoing evaluation for continuous improvement and demonstrated impact is a key to success.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled on a post-secondary program and planning to return once this position ends.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Check – dated within the last 6 months. Copy required.
  • Able to work collaboratively in a small, hands-on work environment
  • Energetic and self-directed, with effective time management and organizational skills, including the ability to deal with multiple priorities at the same time
  • Strong interpersonal, conflict resolution and negotiating skills
  • Excellent communications skills, both verbal and written
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to improve projects, programs and processes
  • Eager to learn new systems and adopt improved best practices
  • A genuine commitment to the mission, vision, values, and work of the agency.

Responsibilities

  • Support execution of community engagement programs for schools, volunteers, practicum students and meal sponsors.
  • Carry out the day-to-day activities involving volunteers, public education, advocacy, meal sponsors & meal sponsorship and other proactive and reactive engagement opportunities
  • Build strong collaborative relationships internally, across the organization, and externally, among partners
  • Cultivate and solicit gift-in-kind donations for fundraising events and greatest needs items
  • Follow communications templates and procedures when working with community partners
  • Foster a culture of community engagement throughout the DI, to ensure stewarding positive relationships and problem-solving for the best possible, mutually beneficial outcomes
  • Mange community engagement bookings via online systems and communicate with stakeholders on bookings accordingly
  • Support community and onsite events from planning to execution
  • Support clothing room, laundry, Donation Centre and kitchen operations, when required
