About The Position

Under the direction of the Community Services Manager, this position is responsible for overseeing a variety of programs, facilities, and services that promote youth development, encourage teens to make positive choices, and provide recreational, educational, and enrichment opportunities for all ages in a variety of settings, including but not limited to, City facilities, school campuses, local businesses, and neighborhoods. Additionally, this position assists in the direction and oversight of the Newhall and Canyon Country Community Centers, including staff, rentals, operations, events, and programs. This position oversees approximately 12 full-time and 60 part-time, temporary seasonal (PTS) staff and volunteers, and works with local agency representatives from law enforcement, local school districts, and non-profits on a variety of City initiatives to maintain the safety and quality of life for youth and families in Santa Clarita. The position may periodically rotate to oversee other program areas within the department, as needed. Additionally, this position may be required to work various hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, based on program needs. The multi-faceted and unique program areas this position oversees are described below: Community Resource Collaborative: A quarterly meeting that brings local resource agencies and City staff together to share resources and collaborate on events and programs that enhance the community DFY in SCV: A free, school-based, voluntary, anti-drug program for elementary, middle, and high school youth throughout Santa Clarita, dedicated to educating, empowering, recognizing, and celebrating students who make healthy choices. Also includes a parent education component called Parenting for Prevention Gang Prevention Task Force: A community networking group to discourage gang activity, lessen the appeal of gangs, and end gang crime in Santa Clarita through partnerships, proactive programming, and networking Neighborhood Engagement: Recreational opportunities and events directly in local neighborhoods alongside local service providers and community volunteers Teen Diversion Program: A program for teens who have committed minor crimes and traffic violations are provided an opportunity to learn from their mistakes and make better choices in the future through accountability, learning opportunities, and resources Youth Employment Services: A program providing paid job opportunities and job skills training for at-risk youth ages 15-19 throughout the year Youth in Government: Local high school students get a behind-the-scenes look at local government and learn about operations and careers through hands-on experiences Newhall and Canyon Country Community Centers: The Centers provide recreational, educational, and enrichment opportunities year-round for all ages, from toddlers to seniors. Additionally, the Centers offer special holiday events, seasonal programs, and rental opportunities for the public Vital Intervention Directional Alternatives (VIDA): A Sheriff’s Department program that teaches at-risk youth ages 11 to 17 the importance of effective decision-making and taking responsibility for their future.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree in public administration, recreation, communications, business administration, or a related field
  • Four years of experience overseeing programs in community services
  • Minimum one year of supervisory experience
  • A valid Class C driver license or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation to carry out job-related functions
  • Ability to demonstrate flexibility and work various hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as needed, based on program needs
  • Ability to lift, drag, and push equipment, files, paper, and documents weighing up to 25 pounds

Nice To Haves

  • Supervisory experience and a Master’s degree are highly desirable
  • Bilingual in Spanish & English is highly desirable
  • Any combination of education and experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary will be considered

Responsibilities

  • Leads, trains, mentors, and directs the work of assigned staff, including workload management, performance evaluation, and professional development
  • Evaluates programs and services to identify and implement necessary changes, improvements, and enhancements based on the needs of the community and the organization
  • Addresses personnel and program-related issues professionally, responsibly, and in a timely manner
  • Ensures a high level of customer service, safety awareness, and professionalism is maintained for all programs, events, classes, and operations
  • Assists with division budget preparation, prioritizes needs, allocates funds to various programs, monitors revenue and expenditures, prepares decision packages, and oversees program area purchasing
  • Develops, fosters, and maintains positive working relationships with the local business community and organizations; state/local agencies and associations; City management and staff; and the public
  • Attends and presents at Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Commission meetings; community meetings; and other meetings as needed
  • Performs other duties as assigned
