About The Position

The Community Service Officer (CSO) plays a crucial role in supporting law enforcement by performing a variety of duties that assist other departments, principally public safety. CSOs provide customer service to citizens, enforce certain tribal codes, and perform other non-criminal police-related duties. They provide patrol and community outreach, non-EMS on-site and in-home assistance to citizens, respond to non-criminal complaints, investigate and handle animal complaints, conduct boat inspections, and more. They do not perform tasks legally restricted to peace officers, do not carry firearms, and have no powers of arrest. The CSO is a non-sworn employee of the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Police Department and is designated as a civilian position.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to work effectively with law enforcement officers and other personnel.
  • Proficiency in using computerized systems for tracking information.
  • Great Communication skills both oral and written.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in person, over the phone, and in writing.
  • Ability to become fluent with CRITPD systems.
  • Valid driver’s license and a clean driving record for the past three years.
  • Three-year record clear of Reckless Driving.
  • Three-year record clear of Driving Under the Influence.
  • Three-year record clear of Suspension or revoked license.
  • No more than two at-fault accidents in the past three years.
  • No more than one major violation or two minor violations in the past three years.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of tribal languages is a plus.
  • Certified Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and/or first responder certification is preferred but can be provided if the candidate lacks this training.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a “goodwill ambassador” for Public Safety by providing friendly, helpful customer service to the general public.
  • Enforce certain tribal codes/ordinances. Convey information and explain violations, be understanding and courteous by listening to other parties and use tact to defuse situations.
  • Respond to and/or provide assistance to full-time public safety officers on calls for service. The CSO responds to calls for service which include lock-outs, animal complaints, motorist assists, lost persons and article reports, private property accident reports, lift assists, and other non-criminal calls for service and reports that assist a sworn officer.
  • Conduct boat safety inspections.
  • Assist with disbursal of unique evidence such as nets and fish that need to be rotated to the tribes.
  • Assist with coordination of Public Relations events, such as fairs, parades, career booths and other PR events.
  • Provide administrative staff assistance to the Police Department. Deliver intergovernmental correspondence to and from tribal or county agencies.
  • Patrol In-Lieu/TFAS and other public places investigate minor incidents where no citations, injuries, or arrests will take place, and other administrative tasks, as needed.
  • Maintain cordial public relations with the residential and business communities, as well as other governmental entities to share valuable information, better resolve problems, and provide enhanced customer service to the general public.
  • Act as eyes and ears of the Police, FSMD, and Community Development Departments.
  • If certified, conduct child safety seat installations and educate the public with such knowledge.
  • Assist disabled motorists, including those locked out of their vehicles.
  • Conduct regular patrols of the community looking for safety hazards, people in need of assistance, identify and resolve violations of tribal codes and regulations.
  • Act as a liaison between the social services such as mental health, family services, and victim services.
  • Other duties as determined by necessity.
